    DVLA - license exchange/renewal

I just thought i'd praise the DVLA for making it so easy to get a driving license updated. I had to get three things done to my driving license:

    - Change of address
    - Remove expired points
    - Change from a paper license to a photo ID license

All of this can be done for free. Moreover, if you have a new digitial passport (i.e. one in which your photo is printed on after being scanned) then you don't even have to send your passport in - just write down your passport number and they can look up your photo on the Passport Offices Web site to see if it is you. You still have to send one passport-sized photo for the new license though. All in all, a very straightfoward process - just a single form (D1) to fill in.

I'm sure I heard mention in this fair forum of people having to pay (£12) to get their points removed...

(I'm not sure, as personally I have never been caught breaking the law... )

I phoned them up and told them what I wanted to do - change of address, remove expired points and get a photo ID license all in one go. The lady explained how to do this and I asked how much it would could cost. She said it was free!

A change of address is a free replacement. if you have other things to be done at the same time, they're also done gratis. Easy way of blagging a freebie point removal

Remember though, that the DVLA are notorious for forgetting to carry over any entitlements on your licence other than category B (Cars). Loads of motorcyclists got their category A missed off, and when I went to a job interview for a bus driving position the other day one of the other guys found that they'd missed off his category D when he got his licence renewed about 6 months ago. Check your licence carefully when it comes back and complain immediately if they've forgotten anything. To be on the safe side, take a photocopy of your old licence before you send it off.
