I'm glad that it's not true about insurers not insuring people with modified cars... I thought that sounded a bit strange!.

What bugs me though is that some modifcations, such as brake pads or suspension... if they are just standard replacements you don't need to contact the insurance company... but if they are something good quality and with a name (not something stock) then they want to know about it.. or at least they do when you look at online quotes...

hmm well a long as you let them know , then y are unlikely to load the premium that much.( for having uprated discs / pads for example )

They don't usually load the premium at all for safety or cosmetic changes. Performance/handling is different though

sorry to disagree but the conversation goes:

[insurer] Has the vehicle been modified in any way ?
    [me] Yes
[insurer] Sorry we don't insure modified vehicles.
    [me] Why not ?
[insurer] We only insure low-risk drivers
[me] I have been driving over 12 years on my own policy and have never had an own-fault accident, just one no-fault accident, and have no points on my licence, how am I high risk ?
[insurer] Sorry, it's what the computer says.

Last insurance renewal time I phoned about 25 of the top insurers and got that exact response from about 20 of them. I never get online quotes, I would rather talk to them on the phone, as you can find out they won't insure you quicker.

But maybe it's changed in the last year or so, as it's about 18 months since I tried phoning round, my offer to renew with my current insurer was damn good this year.

I hear Adrian Flux is very good for insuring modified vehicles - I bet they charge a lot though?

They specialise in insuring modified vehicles, yes. 'Good' is a matter of opinion.
