    Vauxhall slashes 900 jobs

    Quote:

"Vauxhall has announced it is to slash 900 jobs and cut production at its Ellesmere Port plant. Parent company General Motors said it would reduce the number of shifts at the site from three to two and is aiming to achieve the job losses through voluntary redundancies. GM blamed “ongoing pressure” in the car industry to increase productivity and reduce costs for the cuts."

Another blow for the UK car industry.......

Shocking isn't it, what with Rover, Pug and now Vauxhall it makes you wonder how long before Toyota and Nissan think about doing something similar if car sales really are as bad as they're making out.

Call me a cynic but I wonder if VX will open a plant in Eastern Europe somewhere where labour rates are cheaper...

its only to be expected whilst uk labour prices are high, and the workforce unreliable (both pug and vaux workers striked within the last 2 months i think..). yeah its a shame, but i dont blame gm at all - they're loosing (if i remember right) 24 million dollers per HOUR - the quicker they can close down various cost-inducing outlets, the better for their survival..

Put it this way, if I had a job in the british car industry right now, I'd be looking to find some new skills!

you watch this trend head eastward...

it's harsh, but imagine a large wiperblade of cost cutting moving slowly from the west of Europe, where jobs and labour are expensive..to the East where labour and overheads are cheap.

Over the next few years the two Astra factories (Belgium and Germany) maybe in the same boat

That's why you'll hear the German and Belgian boys talking on radio about their support for the Scouse lads and lasses....they can see it occuring righ over europe.

Makes me shudder to think of the history of the uk motor trade manufacturing and it's downward spiral
