    How wide are parking spaces?

OK, I know its a kind of open ended question, in the 'how long is a piece of string' vein, but I am wondering what you would consider a reasonable width for a parking space is. The internet seems to have a few differences of opinions...

The key word in this question is reasonable

I don't know the figure, but I remember seeing a program about parking which mentioned that the average on-street parking space is now narrower than a new model Ford Focus, and that people had been ticketed for parking outside the lines. I guess you are thinking along a similar thread.

actually we're buying a house, and were told there are two parking spaces allocated to it - we looked at the plans and they are 2m each wide only, which means if you take the one next to the wall, you can't get out of your car unless via the sunroof. And we're talking about a VW Golf here! The wing mirrors take the width to over 2m. As the plans aren't set in stone yet, I was going to bring this up with the vendors, but was wondering what peoples thoughts were, or if they knew of any standards anywhere.

you'll find a lot of this happening.. it's simply due to cars getting fatter and fatter.. theres a few spaces in my flats that no-one can get into wihtout lots of difficulty.. most new houses' garages can't hold a car either

My parents can't get the new-model Passat they want, as it won't fit in the garage - they've a double garage with individual doors, stable-style...

I have found that waitrose have by the far the biggest parking spaces out there. Plently of room to open doors etc and not have to worry about your mirrors etc being knocked by prats that can reverse out However someone did park close to me and i watched them knock my mirror they drove of as i ran towards them in a rage

My audi is a nightmare to park in a garage place we're moving to has a 7ft garage door, and my audi is a bit over 6ft wide on the wheel arches...

but its the outside parking i'm more worried about!
