    Angry Rover 214Si starting problem

I have a 1996 Rover 214si that starts well in the morning and drives well BUT if you get stuck in traffic it developes a miss which takes a while to go, also once the car has started if you turn off the ignition and tap the throttle a couple of times it seems to flood and will fire but not start.

Local garage changed injectors and several other little parts to no avail

    Any advice welcome

    Thanks
    Jack

maybe it wont start because you are flooding the engine?

as for it missing. im unsure, my mates skoda does it all the time, it just dies, and then comes back to life, mainly when its needed most, like pulling off at junctions and such.

Don't know the engine that well. Could be spark related, has it still got a distributer?

If not, maybe time to check the fault log on the management.

start car, warm thoroughly, switch off.

Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes.

Gently remove expansion cap, watch the water level, and if it tries to overflow, tighten cap again leave cap on for another five mnutes and try again. We're looking to get the cap off without the fluid level pouring out....but with a hot engine.

Once it's off, we've let all the pressure out......screw it back on again! tight.

Start engine, and rev at abuot 3000prpm for 30 seconds

Engine off (so it's quiet) and put your ear right next to the expansion tank again, and slowly unscrew it. With only 30 seconds of gentle revving, and now it's off, it it should not hiss at all, maybe a tiny tiny amount, but not audible.

If it hisses a lot...it's done a head gasket. The air pressure from inside the piston bores is being squished into the coolant system, and the head gasket needs replacing.

Those K series engines were highly prone to doing head gaskets. Get a compression test done. Also do as above, although your first check should be to take the oil filler cap off and check the underside and around the inside edges (of the rocker cover) for any whiteish mayo looking fliud. Any sign of that and the head gasket has gone - water and oil mix causing the white fluid.
