    Pug 306

    Hi. Hope someone can help.
    I have a 1998 306 GSX, and from time to time, especially when I first start it, the enginine conks out when I put the clutch down. It does this for a while, until I drive it for about 5 mins. Also, after driving 10 or 15 miles, when the clutch is pressed, the car revs itself on and off up to 40,000rpm. Am I right in thinking this is a dodgey auto-choke (or whatever the name for the new auto-choke thing is)?
    Is it easily replaced?

    Could be but more lileky is the engine management has gone a little bit haywire. The ECU controls the idle of the car. When the clutch is up and gears are engaged it has far less to do because you as a driver are governing whether the car will stall or not. When you depress the clutch it has to work in order for the engine to stay started but not stall. In this case it is having trouble finding that nice idle. Normally this is called 'hunting' but that would assume a rough wobbly idle (which you seem not to have) but the other symptoms to suggest a faulty ECU or at least one that has lost a few of its marbles.

    You can try a reset, often just unlplugging the battery for 20 minutes will do this. If that does not work take the car to your dealer and ask for the ecu to be re-programmed.
