    Torque converter

How can you tell if your cars torque converter has a locking clutch?

The reason i ask is that i want to practice some faster getaways in my dads 316 auto

Will it do much damage holding it on the brake and using the loud pedal?

I hear that if you put M3 badges, you get a 12% torque increase right accross the rev-range.

You'd need to overide it [electronically --or rewire it yourself]. Besides, I don't understand why you'd want to cane that poor Beemer anymore? If you did manage to get it to lock, it eats away at the clutch in a mildly alarming rate.

Faster getaways in a tired 316? My car is quicker than yours. Why bother?

nope they do a 316. i done a quote on one when i was 20. £2600 insurance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for a coupe.... bloody stupid.. as soon as i hit 21, the insurance dropped to £1600... sod that.. so i went for a 1.6 16v Megane coupe £1000 insurance.

BMW 3 series are nice cars but insurance is stupid for people my age range.

Only problem is the 320 is underpowered, let alone the 316. The only 3 series worth driving are the 328 and 325.

    Whoaa.....slow up dudes.

First.....a 320 is only slow if ya dont understand 6 pots....a 318 is often better. cos its a 4 pot.

Second....torque convertors aren't truly clutches, but you can burn themout.

Third.....the best way to pull away in an Auto made by BMW is let it do it all itself..theyreally do know what they are doing.

Fourth....holding it on the brake and hitting the gas pedal can be WORSE....you see, the brakes work off a VACUUM....from the inlet manifold......when you hit the BRAKES AND THE POWER, in lots of cars, the power DROPS....cos the brakes rob the correct airflow, AND the fuel injection spots it and drops the power.

How do I know? Cos my used cars need driving regularly,to clean up the brakes.....they get rusty....and I have, for the last 14 years, left foot braked to get them hot and hold the power on.

In the last 4 years, more andmore cars have had a cut out when I do this .

If I now left foot brake for more than a split second in my modern Vauxhalls, I go through the screen

all the power goes AND the brakes work harder.

    So leave it alone....please

    Fair enough.

Yes they do make a 316! grrr, but ive been told many stories, that its actually a 318 (dont think this is true as its before they started overating engine sizes) and that its a 318 with a different ECU! I dunno which to believe.

Insurance is ok, at 21 (4 yrs NCB) it was 550 per year named driver.

Zakk, how can you burn out a torque converter, i thought they were 2 spinning plates (well 3 really) with fins and a viscous fluid inside? As they spin the fluid is directed using the fins to the other plate that spins the drive shaft. (please dont take this as an argument im eager to learn!)

Er. Call me a "rubbish UT player" but it's better to lock the convertor than burn it out, surely? Wollie; you'd have to go track down on some bimmerboard a chip or electric gubbins to bypass and lock the thing.

'Least, that's what I understand of them -- my wealth of auto' ownership, of course.

    Got Autosport tickets, bitch?

Personally, I rate the older BMW 7 series, before they made them cack looking.

If you SHEAR viscous fluid too much, you ruin it.

It NEEDS to thicken up......if you FORCE it to not thicken over and over you ruin its....er....."molecular" viscosity ?

Don't think Molecular is a proper word for this.....ermm...

You know some sweets ,long bars of chewy swee pink stuff, can be either slowly STRETCHED.....for over a foot, ....

or SNAPPED OFF in one rapid action?

Thats how the fluid works.,....but thinner....and if you do it too many times, you knacker it!

more like knackering them...it ruins the "bond" they have with each other.
