my bike - mirrors no good

Just bought my first bike in 5 years, an f-reg Suzuki GSX-400F, I'm quite happy with it. New tyres, tax + MOT until April. Cheap to run, insure and tax, and was only £700 with some leather gear that is my size!
At 10k rpm it really has a decent amount of power too.

However I did my first commute in this morning, and I found I had to adjust the side mirrors nearly every time I stopped as they would tend to move down as I rode. It was definitely a problem. Any suggestions to stop it?

    BTW, gaffa/duct-tape isn't a solution...

are they are ball and socket fittment ?

a trick I've seen the AA use is to cut the end of a finger from a pair of rubber gloves and put that round the ball to make it a tighter fit.

either that or it'll be new mirror time

Yeah, they are double hinged. I'm not sure if it's the end - which is ball and socket - or the arm - not sure what joint type that is.

Rubber glove solution is affordable though, I'll have a look today if I can. I'll pinch a pair from the cleaners cabinet! :-p

    look over your shoulder?

in all seriousness, bike mirrors are genereally usueless in my experience, either too small/vibration blurred or filled with elbows/shoulders/spare heads etc. I never trusted to just my mirrors when I was riding.

I just indicate and swerve at the moment. I don't like turning my head with the helmet on, it hurts my neck! [/joke]

So it's not just my mirrors that aren't much use - still would like them to work at least in the shaky-small way rather than be totally useless.

OK, I removed the tape from the offending mirror - which kept sagging down - and it wasn't broken, the numpty who owned it before just didn't try tightening them up! Instead they used Gaffa tape! Now I'm left cleaning the gunk from the tape off the mirror...

so 1 allen key and 1 spanner later, fixed mirrors.

^^Dont worry mate, i've done my safety training when I got my license. I'm shoulder checks all the way - mirrors just help to see if there are any bikes directly behind me, etc. Still I think I'll join one of the motorbike associations and get some more training just for refreshing.
