    Insurance

Just a quick question about car insurance. Say I had two policies, with different companies, on different cars. If I had to claim one policy, would my premium for the other policy go up when I had to renew again? I have protected no claims on both policies.

    Thanks

I think it would... when you renew they always ask if you have had any claims, if they are not already told by the one you claim from.

what would you be claiming on?

Not normally, seperate NCB on seperate policies.

When my dad phonned for a quote on my car with him as first driver and me as named, the company said he had to start with 0NCB on my car as its a seperate policy

if you have made a claim, you have to disclose to any insurance you have. so yes it will go up regardless of NCB.

I can see that if its with the same insurance company, but if he used a different one I am sure you could have your ncb counting on two policies - it should anyway...

Well the 2nd car would only be on third party, fire and theft, so I'd only be claiming if it was stolen etc. Also, does it matter if its the main or named driver that makes the claim? I'm looking at Direct Line, as they offer no claims for named drivers.

    Thanks

When speaking to your insurers they ask for any claims in the past x years regardless of where you claimed from.

On my insurance I have to tell them that my fiancee had an accident (non-fault) last year in her own car when adding her as a named driver on my policy.

As for your situation if you had two policies on two cars with independantly accumulated NCB's and had an accident you would need to inform both insurers about the accident. The policy you claim on would have the NCB affected if relevant and probable increase in premium. The policy/car you're not claiming on should not have the NCB affected as you're not claiming on the policy, whether the premium goes up depends on the insurer (so probably slightly).

That's how I see it anyway

There's not gonna be a massive difference on the insurance that hasnt had a claim on though?

I wouldn't have thought so, the main factor is NCB and if they're going to make you earn two lots seperatley and independantly then they should be affected seperately and independantly. NCB should be tied to the policy you are using it on and not be affected by the other policy. Although I would expect a small (£20-50) increase as a "you had an accident" charge.

Be worth checking with an insurer though, ask an independant broker if you can, rather than phoning one of the big companies as it won't be an option on the front screen and will only confuse them.

*nods* My understanding is that you won't loose the no-claims bonus, but you will have to declare a previous accident/situation.

NCB on the other policy won't be touched, but you have to declare any accidents, increasing the premium.

On protected no claims, if you make a claim you won't loose your NCB but your premium will go up.

How much does it go up? A surprisingly large amount.
