    Whats happened to modding?

    Whats happened to modding?

A few years ago case modding was massive. Everyone wanted to own a modded case.... more so when it was a CoolerMaster or Lian Li. The top people in cases.

People would spend hours on modifying their computer. Adding blowholes to the computer case... not because it was functional.... it was done because it looked cool. School Kids, Students, Big Kids (Adults), would spend their pocket money, student loan and wages on small items to make the PC look better.

I can remember sitting for about 3 hours one day with a PSU, and a bag of spiral wrap. It felt more like 6 hours and my fingers were numb at the end of it all.

Why has all this phased away now? I blame pre modded cases. Its killed the case modding community. I cant understand why though? If an individual spends so much effort on making a PC so unique by adding blowholes, windows, spiral wrapping, led fans etc... then why does somebody go out and buy an off the shelf plastic bulk order computer case?

Bring back the good old days....

Not dead mate far from it

If anything its improving some the mods in these forums are superb

    http://www.mashie.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=2

There are some simply stunning stuff around just in a few places, there is also some good stuff on bit-tech too.

The thing that has changed is the people doing the odd window and blowhole as most cases come with them nowadays and its not really considered modding by most people. The hobby has moved to scratch built cases and really artistic work like this for example, which is a work of art and its not even done yet!

    http://www.wizdforums.co.uk/showthre...?t=1758&page=1

The main difference is that people are doing stuff the early modders couldn't even dream of thanks to access to some very very high end tools most modders can't afford. That said two of the best modders around Mashie and Paul from TCS dont use much in the way of advanced tool mainly hand tools and get stunning results.

its unique now to not have these things but keep to basics, go a lan party and you see 100 windows 80000 diffrent colour leds and its all gone silly. ive been theres ghettoed a few cases that were then being hold up by gaffa tape cut myself etc etc and these days just want it to look clean, no window, and do the simple things that can make your case unique but not in a maxpower way

I got sick of it, I just got a case and made sure I actually made the cooling good enough and that was it. Far gone are the days of me modding, the only modding I have planned now is the car

Modding dead ......nah you just need to know where to look

From what I've seen imo is that peeps seem to post hardware and technical questions here but when it comes to modding they go elsewhere.

It may not be the case but as Gordy mentioned there are other forums and website's dedicated to modding.

I'm 32 and have been modding PC's for sometime now with a rather decent selection of modded PC's and perhiperals. My problem is I get bored way to easily. I'll mod a case then within a few months I'm bored and start another project. Suppose its easy modding cases so often as its part of my job just lucky I guess. The Mrs says I'm a big kid .....who's to argue with that

The only reason I never post any of my projects is that I'm always so busy. 48hrs into 24 and all that.
I run a modding company thats been goin for a few years with clients including Intel and Scan computers to name a few.
One of the projects I covered for Scan was the "Cobra" series which were even reviewed on Hexus itself.

    Just a little snippit

Thing is I'm so busy with work I never get time to update my website. I had one a while ago and have recently started a new one. Its prettty basic but it gets the point accross.

I have just recently completed some case mods which I think are going to be a worlds first. As soon as I can disclose some info I will, with pleasure.

I plan on having some modding tutorials and videos on there soon. So If anybody would like to have a look check out http://www.totallycustomised.co.uk/cms

Feel free to upload any modding pics to the gallery.

I've seen some of the work Rimmers been doing recently.

Its bloody awesome and makes my paint-skills look like a 3 year old armed with a squeezy bottle of paint.

Nice, I built a little case for Intel as well back in the day.

Do you do any mods except killer paintjobs?

I prefer the clean, silver ailum look, with a few fan holes covered in mesh, and the blue leds lights shinning out. Simple, but always looks good.

Yeah a few, TBH I specialise in the painting side as I've been doing it for over 15 years now.
We've started offering laser cutting such as can be seen here -->
    or here -->

..which is pretty decent as back in the day all we had were, drills, jigsaws and files etc.

I'll try anything once.....twice if I like it

Laser cutting, now i could have done with that about 5 years ago.

The lack of money and space at uni sort of halted my one and only project, it was going so well too! (purple, custom window, aspirations of UV and some funky purple LED's in a baybus.)

Nothing like these guys though, I've been a big fan forever.
