X360 - Does Microsoft want us to play ANY Xbox games?

Okay, so I was pissed off enough at the fact that most of my Xbox games don't run on the 360, having been foolish enough to give up my Xbox as part exchange in the belief the new console was as backwards compatible as claimed.... But, like many people, I took solace in the fact that Halo and Halo 2 still ran, as they'd tide me over until Halo 3.

Unfortunately, it seems that this isn't actually the case; because I'm using the VGA cable, Halo 1 and Halo 2 won't run online. Upon connecting to Xbox Live I get an error about how the games only run in PAL 50; even though they run perfectly on campaign!

Does anybody have any similar issues with Microsoft's reluctance to let us play Xbox games, or know a way around this besides using the far-inferior composite cable?

backward compatibility doesn't matter once a system has enough of its own games, as is the case with the 360

and there's no way to convert 50-hz-only games to 60hz for online play without introducing timing issues

It's not a 50hz only game though. I run it at 60hz using my component cable. It just seems as though Microsoft can't be bothered to support their own products as they know that everybody with Halo 1 and 2 will buy 3 anyway.

the timings need to be the same for all versions playing. for online play, the servers will only be taking connections from 50hz users - silently switching original xbox users to 50hz when needed

you can't do 50hz on vga, hence not allowing online play on 50hz servers

the US copies of the games work fine via vga

I actually get that error trying to run the Top Spin 2 demo for the 360 . The settings to change between modes aren't available either, any workarounds?

I got an error trying to run The Outfit demo - it said it required 60Hz. This was despite the fact that the console was outputting in PAL-60, and worked fine with other 60Hz games.

there's a bug in some early 360 games (such as XBLA content) whereby it reads your SDTV settings instead of HDTV to determine what resolution you're running at

the fix is to switch to a normal SD connection, change to 60Hz, then back to your HD connection

(Feeding Frenzy is affected by this)

I discovered this when playing that exact game, so i blow the dust off my componant lead make the change and then I find out to my own amusement that it was rubbish! Pennycook you should have checked the xbox games you wanted to play on the well known backwards compatability list It was made widely known before the launch of the 360 what the state of affairs would be.

For the Halo 2 thing, Bungie explained it in their Weekly Update. For some reason, you can't update the game through VGA - so, just plug the console in to another display using Composite, update it and then play it through VGA again.

It's a bit irritating, I was just fortunate though as my monitor supports Composite so I didn't have to move the console
