http://www.xbox-scene.com/ will explain everything in far more detail than you could wish for
The best chips were from team xecuter, by far. The features, stability and quality of them are unrivalled. Depending on what you want to do, chances are you could use a cheap X2. The X3 is more advanced, but they are more for hardcore geeks who want to modify and play with advanced settings.
Installing a chip isnt hard, provided you know how to use an iron. If you dont though, find someone that does.
You can also softmod the console (no need for a chip).
There is plenty of homebrew out there, XBMC is one of the best projects ive come across on any system. As long as piracy isnt discussed, you should be ok - plenty of other threads on XBMC and the lies here
Just to make it clear - The X2/X3 will not allow you to play copied games when you buy it. It is 100% homebrew, legal code on the chip.

Hacking/modding is a bit of a grey area, those threads you mention actually only discuss what you can do with the Xbox and the 360s first "modchip" which was fake anyway. None of them give direct links, nor has anyone asked for "good links/guide to xbox hacking, what mod chip to get, what OS to install etc".
Just letting you know its a grey area on here, discussion of piracy and its effects (i.e. Windows Vista crack has been cracked etc. with no links to the actual crack, HD-DVD key etc.) is technically allowed, but discussion on how to modify or commit piracy is strictly forbidden. (someone feel free to tell me if I'm wrong, but thats my interpretation of the rules)
hmm, my post seems to have been pruned...
like Agent says, checkout and [http://www.xboxmediacenter.com]xbmc for a replacement dashboard...
I've chipped my xbox with the [http://www.kanection.co.uk/product.p...xapter]xecuter 2[/url] chip, and you can get a solder-free adaptor, which means you dont have to solder anything

from forums.hexus.net/announcement.php?f=4&a=11:
"HEXUS Forum Guidelines.
As such we do not have a “Rules List”. We welcome all members to our forums here.
..."
Which rules should I be reading? I can see nothing which says I can't discuss replacement DVD drives or mod chips for my old xbox.
Mod chips means you can pirate games, discussion of piracy techniques isn't usually allowed on forums not dedicated to it since the forum could be viewed as spreading piracy by those evil acronym companies and cause trouble for the site.
Not always
Mod-chips as they ship contain 100% legal, homebrew code. If you decide to put an illegal BIOS on the mod-chip, that's up-to you. A chip on its own will not allow you to pirate games (you would not be able to buy them if this was the case)
Now if a huge number of people decide to do this, thats up to them, but not everyone does . I have a modded console that I did myself that runs XBMC and a few other open source programs, yet every single one of my games is legal.
Its a heck of a lot easier to softmod (and cheaper!) the console if he just wanted to play copied games
Chips for XBOX 1 are all but redundant, i have both a hard modded and a soft modded xbox and the difference between them is tiny (being able to open the tray without a reset is nice on the hard modded one though ). If you are going to go for a hard mod, they are relatively easy to do, just make sure if its a v1.6 xbox that you do the LCP rebuild on the bottom or your out of luck. Oh and if you want to soft mod, you'll need an official memory card a USB reader for the PC (you can make your own if you think your upto it) and a copy of either splinter cell, mech warriors or james bond nightfire. XBMC is one of the best things ever! If only the xbox was upto processing HD video it would be the ulitmate media device!
