    PS3 connectivity using PC motherboard

    Hi all
Don't know if this is the right place to post this

Having bought my PS3 yesterday everything seems to work fine and i am pleased with the jump in quality even on a crappy standard def tv. However i am having trouble connecting to the internet/network (like a few people). Specifically getting the ip address on the connection test.

I have the internet on the PC downstairs
ISP Virgin Media with a NTL:250 modem connected via usb to the pc
I have an ASUS P5W-DH Deluxe motherboard with in built WiFi-AP Solo 3 in 1 Wireless LAN Adapter
I have set up a wireless access point on the PC and the wireless network connection is working with a excellent signal strength.

Within the Interent Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties i have an IP address and Subnetmask but no Default gateway or DNS settings.

On the PS3 when i go through the network setup prompts it picks up the SSID from downstairs with a 95% signal strength and i went throught the next few prompts clicking automatic and the like. When it comes to 'test connection' at then it cannot pick up the IP.

This is the first time i have gone about doing anything wireless as i have had no need previously. Am i going about it the wrong way using the ASUS WiFi gubbins, do i need a router instead of using the motherboard?

    Any help would be great

    The console looks chuffin gawgeous

a router would have solved your problems in the time it took you to type the above message.

    howEVER...

first, ensure your security settings match between both machines - if your internet-connection-sharing wireless is using WEP or WPA, make sure the ps3 does too.

also, don't try configuring the wireless on the pc yourself - USE THE SHARING WIZARD IN WINDOWS! everything tends to break if you don't

Re: PS3 connectivity using PC motherboard

I tired using wireless with the PS3 and even after seeing a 80% connection strength i found issues - i decided to use homeplugs via a router and have had no issues since

Depending on where you live - if you are in a old place with thick walls wireless can be very deceiving in the strength and the actual quality of connections. Wired or hopelugs are your friend in this case

Re: PS3 connectivity using PC motherboard

    Hi all

In a final push to get my PS3 online for the christmas period and beyond i need to get this router contraption. I can't be bothered with the onboard wifi computer setup now.

My ISP is Virgin Media cable

I'm connecting my PC via the cable modem and USB, i'm going to start using ethernet instead of the USB soon.

I don't have any other wireless products like laptops at the moment but maybe will in the future.

I was looking at getting this router, the only reason it's from PCWorld is because i want to go over and get it today.

NETGEAR WGR614 WIRELESS 54MBPS ROUTER with ACCESS POINT - Buy cheap NETGEAR DSL wireless routers at PC World

    or maybe

NETGEAR WGT624 WIRELESS 108MBPS ROUTER - Buy cheap NETGEAR DSL wireless routers at PC World

and a set of these homeplugs to give me a somewhat bullet proof ps3 connectivity

    HomePlug / PowerLine PL-85PE 85Mbps Ethernet Adapter

Is this a good router to choose? I've been looking at so many routers and the only thing i know for sure is that i need a cable version. I don't know which ones are new and which ones are old. I don't want to be spending much over £50/£60.

One thing i was wondering, the homeplugs are capable of 85mbps but it says the router is capable of upto only 54mbps. Is this a major problem that would effect preformance of the ps3 and other products.

    Thanks all

Re: PS3 connectivity using PC motherboard

    Cheers Steve for the reply,

I had a look at your router but it's out of stock at the 3 closest stores to myself

    Ive reserved this router

NETGEAR WGR614 WIRELESS 54MBPS ROUTER with ACCESS POINT - Buy cheap NETGEAR DSL wireless routers at PC World

Any opinions guys, as long as i havent made an obvious blunder with a notoriously poor router. It seems to have had good reviews, with few expected poor ones too.

    Cheers
