    Problem starting game after install

Hi there, I bought a copy of GOW from eBay but when I try to play after the install I get a error box message saying

    C\Users\Paul\Desktop\binaries\wargame-g4wlive.exe:<?int?Warfaregame.errorMessages-ModifiedCode?>

How can it be modified code on a original "Games for Windows" disc? Anyone shed any light on this?

I have tried installing it 4 times now but always get the same error. It also takes a long time installing around two and a half hours maybe more. I just installed Fallout 3 and it was very quick. The GOW disk does have a couple of light scratch marks but nothing serious. I bought a Crysis disc last week that was a bit of a mess and it works perfectly

    Thank's, Cus!

    2 and a half hours ?????????????

Thats not right at all, what rig are you running it on?

Sounds like a disk problem to me, see if you can download it and use the disk to load the game up.

Re: Problem starting game after install

Also, have you changed your My Documents location from the standard windows default?

I had error after error and in the end I found it was due to the My Documents location as I move mine to a whole other partition. I had the exact same error as you and it was all down to file placement.

If this is the case and you are on Vista, reset the My Documents location back to default, install the game and then run it atleast once. Shut down GoW1 and then move your My Documents back to where it was and manually copy the games for windows folder over. Long winded way but it works.

What I will do when I get home from work is I will have a look and see if I kept the links to the Epic forums as it took nearly 2 days of scouting on their forums to find the exact answer.

Re: Problem starting game after install

Dead simple this one - you need patch #3.

The game originally shipped with an expiring digital certificate, this was fixed a few times, but the third patch removes the problem. You can get it from the MS GoW site, or other places like below:

    http://www.fileshack.com/file.x/1150...+of+War+Patch+

The 2.5hr install was normal for me as well.

Yeah the install is massive and the patch to fix the problem of the certificates is around a 30kb patch from memory

I just wish I read up on the GoW issue with the My Documents placement before I installed it xD I generally palm all the docs off onto another partition and GoW doesn't like that lol

I rarely play it myself as I can't be fussed with the hassle. Might just buy a second hand copy for xbox, think I saw one in game for £4 xD

I think you might be right about the disc problem as it will not uninstall now!!!!
I am running it on my spare PC just now, Pentium 4 2.8Ghz, 3GB RAM, 9600GSO, 500GB HDD. It runs Crysis at a decent setting so I think GOW should be OK on it!

Thanks for that bit of info guys, once I download the patch what exactley do I do? Do I need to re-install the game or just run the patch. As you can see in my reply to Steve I am having trouble uninstalling it now.
I have never had to patch a game before so I am in the dark.
Thanks to all of you, Cus

Re: Problem starting game after install

Just run the patch with the game installed and you should be able to play it straight after.

I wouldn't try to uninstall it.. but seeing as you have I guess something's messed up. To clean up a botched install/uninstall is trickier - you need to delete all traces of the game from your hard drive and temporary folders, then run a registry cleaner.

Oh damn, registry cleaner!! is there a free one that actually works without scanning your rig first and then trying to get money from you for fixing it? I always fancied this game but it is becoming more hassle than it's worth TBH.

    Thank's again, Cus
