    PSP... worth it?

The prospect of buying a PSP has been tempting me more and more recently. I don't know why I've always put off buying one, I think I may take the plunge now. I'm just wondering if it's really worth it though:

    - I'm always watching movies on my ipod and think the PSP would be great for watching all my films
    - I'm really into emulators and heard the PSP is very good for this
    - There's a bunch of cheap games that I've always wanted to play (God of War, MGS portable ops, silent hill, FF IV, etc)

The new PSP GO is far too expensive for me, and doesn't seem to warrant doubling the price. I'd be happy paying up to £150 for the PSP, accessories and a few games.

Is it worth getting a PSP at this time?

    Re: PSP... worth it?

I used to use it for movies and stuff during the term time commutes, however these days since I have an eeepc I just bang the movies onto the sd card and watch them on a larger screen. The games in PSP are ok, releases seemed to have slowed down recently, but when I used to game on it I used toi play the RPG games that were released. IMO if you are willing to go to fleabay you can grab a psp1000 for around £ 50/60.

Also if homebrew is what you want you dont have to tinker with the PSP flash memory and can use a HEN to run homebrew on a standard psp console.

    Re: PSP... worth it?

I've been looking on ebay and can't really see any good deals. For the psp 3000 all the buy it now prices are dearer than just getting it off play.com (£130) and everything else is either from Hong Kong or faulty. I think I'd rather buy new (even if it is off ebay) since from my own past experience I've always had trouble buying used electronics.

What's the differences between the 1000 and 3000, apart from size and a better screen?

    Re: PSP... worth it?

I use mine as a Sat Nav and movie player when I'm night fishing,
In my eyes it was definately worth the purchase.

I was fairly suprised at what it can do graphicwise.
As far as emulators go, it's easy to do but there's not much I can say here without a padlock symbol being attached.

I haven't used mine much lately but it's always been a godsend on long fishing trips!

I also picked up the GPS receiver and got a homebrew app that gives me a sattelite terrain view, perfect for finding lakes to fish.

Well apart from the larger and brighter screen, its mainly the RAM + Skype really.

    PSP 1000

    32MB RAM

    Bulky

    No Skype

    PSP 2000

    64MB RAM

    Liter

    Skype

    Brighter

    PSP 3000

    64MB RAM

    Mic

Liter then PSP 2000 and 1000

    Skype

Brighter then PSP 2000 and 1000

New metal ring on the bac

Replace the Home button with the Playstation Logo

How did you manage to connect the GPS reciever to the PSP? Thats quite interesting really, as Ive been using Sat Nav on my eeepc recently. As emulation goes, I used to own a GP32 back in the days for my emulation needs and the PSP, due to its power, is very good and has a wide range of emulators. Nothing beats playing Streets of Rage!

    Re: PSP... worth it?

I have a PSP which I bought when it first came out years ago. Very useful device. Its good for watching movies, and some the games are great fun to play (MGS, etc). Its also very easy to customise with a variety of custom firmwares available and homebrew software.

    Re: PSP... worth it?

Thanks guys, think I'm going to go for the 3000 model then. I'll give eBay another look but I'll most likely just find a good bundle and buy new. I can see myself watching a lot of movies on it, so what sort of size memory stick would I be looking at, 16gb?

Of course I understand that we can't talk much about it, but is all the homebrew stuff available for the other models also available for the 3000?

I think so. It was not like that before but very recent developments have changed things.

16gb memory stick is probably the best as it will allow you to watch lots of movies. I have 4gb which is enough for a couple.

I'll probably get the 8gb one as I just can't justify paying £40 - £50 for a memory stick. I can just swap films in and out.

I've been looking around but can't find any good bundles. Anyone know of any good bundles that come with some accessories and a game or 2?

I bought the official GPS receiver on ebay for £30 a while back,
it just screws into the top mini usb port.

Bargain, put me down for 5.
Call your local blockbuster, my local had some of the new revisions second hand for £69.99.

Don't get Memory Stick Duo's, they're ridiculously expensive. Get this product and use the much cheaper Micro SD cards (up to 2 of them at once) in your PSP. (BTW, this is on Super Specials at the moment, normally a few quid more)

If you have any doubts, I have one and it works fine. Stuck 2x8GB Micro SD cards in it and it costs only a little more than an 8GB Memory Stick Duo!
