In much the same way as I'm not going to let Steam hold me to ransom over games, I'm not going to let MS do it either.

No doubt, most people will buy in, whether they like it or not, but much like Steam has pretty much put an end to my PC gaming, this would end my Xbox gaming.
Oh folk will buy it , but someone will hack it to death and just pirate the games.

Ironically all the folk buying 2nd hand / trading who were at least paying for things, will prob now resort to joining the pirates ( esp with pcs becoming more obsolete and money sparse )

What do they think will happen if they dangle fancy new carrot ?

The 1 million people who bought USED Heavy Rain ... if they had the money to buy the new copy, they would have surely bought it ? They can't afford to buy a new copy, so they bought the USED one.

If there was already a 2nd hand game hardware block, these 1 million people would still not buy a new copy of the game as it would be beyond their budget

When i heard this i was shocked but not surprised. We have been doing it for years on PCs with Steam.

Still going to kill the 2nd hand gaming market and a lot of gamers will be very unhappy. My wife included

But I do want to be able to do so if I choose, and to buy srcond-hand games whenthe right chance appears. For instance, once I bought a few used games (as part of the purchase of a non-game item) from a member here. I got cheap games, and he got a bit of cash for stuff he wasn't going to use again.

But my main objection wasn't actually about that. It was about "always-on connection" and verifying every game on start-up. That, I'm not doing. Period. Which is why I drew the Steam analogy.
To be honest that is exactly the same with me. I have a ton of games, and I never trade in or sell, most get played and gather dust, I have no earthly idea why I don't sell them on..

While I buy my games new, I have been prone to buy a cheap pre-owned game from time to time if I don't want to part full price for a game which I don't know is good or not.

I also don't agree with this "always on connection", I think if it happens they will lose a lot of custom. A lot of people don't have their consoles hooked up to the internet for various reasons, some prefer to play offline, some don't have the internet capabilities to do so and so on, and I completely disagree with it. I work away from home for weeks at a time and rely on my laptop to occupy me, and at times I have no internet connection and as such I usually turn to gaming to pass the time. I usually try to boot up steam and I'm faced with the message that I can't connect to Steam and it won't boot in offline mode which means I can't play the games I own, words cannot describe how much I hate this and how idiotic it is.

I also don't agree with the notion of "online passes" either, just more corporate greed. Practically forces you to buy a game new if you want to play online unless you want to pay an extortionate fee, it's just ridiculous.

I think it's a good idea... anyways, it'll probably mean that game prices will get cheaper and cheaper

    You reckon?

Day-one DLC and online passes didn't exactly do that did they?

This could be a way to cash in on the used market, keep the second market open but pay a small fee to transfer the ownership to you if it's a previously activated copy?

Affordability isn't the issue in most cases. If you have the choice between product A and an identical product B that's cheaper, almost everyone will go for product B, even if they could afford A.

Agreed. I could afford to buy all of my console games new, but I choose not to.

If it's a choice between £40 new, and £10 used, I'll buy used. Frankly, if it's a choice between £15 new, and £10 used, I'll buy used.

To me, there's no value whatsoever in having a sealed box - just the slight security of knowing it'll be in perfect condition. So I'd rather spend that £5+ elsewhere, where I can see the value.

Problem is, when big announcements like this are made, someone will always make the stupid sum of X games sold used, retail price £Y, so X*Y=lost revenue. If the choice becomes £15 or nothing, I'll probably pay £15, but if it becomes £25 or nothing, then it'll be nothing - I'd much rather make do.

if what ive read correctly , basically the game serial is attached to your `account` so you can play the same game on different consoles (but only 1 instance at a given time)

its only `epic fail` for teh vocal minoirty - sales figures of day 0 dlc have shown this to be viable - ethics be damned.

its be known for a while that the likes of EA want to shut down the seconda hand market completely - their atitude is each second hand sale is a lost sale to them

DLC is different from Second hand ownership we are talking about here. Look at Dead space 3 for example , £40 and then there is microtransactions, says alot doesn't it if you want to talk about 'additional content'.

In regards to Second hand content, you've finished your £40 game, collecting dust and you can sell it for 10-15 quid, it's still better than being an expensive coaster. It exposes people who otherwise never played that particular series of game to actually stop and consider buying the next game in the series e.g mass effect rather than wait for it be second hand. Not everyone can afford to pay 40-60pounds for a game.

This model will likely be more suited for Physical games rather than PC 'Digital'. However time will tell in regards if phasing out the second hand market will be detrimental or not.

Actually i bought Heavy Rain second hand, and i badly wanted that game (And it was worth it) so i would have bought it new but... it would have been on a sale price not full price.

So going by me as an example i would have been an extra sale but not at there over inflated RRP.

Good in one way as i would have been giving the developer money to finance there next game, whereas me buying second hand only gave "Game" the money, which thinking of it could be the end of Game and CEX e.t.c.
