Its a portable more than it is a TV console. That, along with the Nintendo license which in itself carries a lot of value, is what you're paying for.
Remember that a lot of Nintendo games are cartoony, so they don't need the same kind of horsepower as say, "call of Duty" even though some of these games, albeit stripped back, are making their way onto the switch.
Thats the thing even with the cartoony cell shaded graphics the switch only does 900p(digital foundries did avideo on the latest zelda game) while costing £300. I may still go for it if theres an xmas deal but feel that these choices are a bit weird.
You shoudlnt pay £300 for it. I paid £280 on a lightning deal with Mario. Admittedly I have spent a TONNE on accessories so far but it feels like ill get a lot of use out of it, so its justified.
The other thing to add is that Indie games are finding their way into the market place. Steam has apparently become less appealing to Indie devs recently and Nintendo is taking advantage

here you go, game and the console for £280.
Mario and Rabbids kingdom is kinda like XCOM, really enjoyable game.

why the insitance on 1080p gaming? What is that about, really?
A games good or it's not.
After 2 or 3 minutes the graphics quality fades away if the game is good. Take Tomb Raider for example. Plug in a PS1 or Sega Saturn and play Tomb Raider. After the first 5 minutes you'll forget its a blocky mess.
And I have seen some horrific 1080p films, in image quality terms. I know a game is different, but is it really? Does Lego Avengers on PS4 play better than if it was an older Lego game, because it's got so much detail? Nope, I don't think it does.

They also give you points so if you're prepared to wait 7 days for those to become active you will then get £13 off your 1st game, or 2nd if you cant be a week without a game.

But there are some games out there with unbelievable graphics and terrible game play.
Good graphics can only keep you engrossed in a game for so long before you move on to something else.
Good game play can keep you glued to the screen for... Well if you go by my steam stats, over 1000 hours
Using a scale that's simply Resolution = Value seems a bit short sighted.
What's better value £50 for a beautiful game that has a few hours of playability, or £50 for very average graphics but totally enthralling story/gameplay with tonnes of replayability?
I would have thought portability would have some value to a Londoner too
