Moving a Sky installation to a house with a dish already installed?

    Howdy,

We've had a Sky subscription for a few years. Last time we moved we went to a place with no dish, so there was the full Sky transfer fee to find. We're moving to a house in a few weeks, and it already has the Sky dish installed from the previous owner.

Does anyone know if in these circumstances you can simply pick up your digibox and plug it in to existing receiving equipment? It would be nice to avoid the £80 fee if possible

We've just done the same. Plugged in SKY and away it went. Mind you we have left it unplugged from the phone for ages, don't know if this makes any difference. Give it a go.

Excellent, thanks. Did Sky say anything about a fee when you told them of the change of address?

The other factor if it worries you is the local BBC and ITV channels. Sky carries all the local versions of BBC and ITV on the satelite, and then configures the viewing card to show you BBC1 London for channel 101 and ITV Carlton for 103.

If you move to the other end of the country, you will have to ask sky to reprogram your viewing card so you get the correct local channels for where you live. They can almost certainly do this remotely, and may do it automatically when you change your billing address.

We're only moving about 150 metres (yes, really) so the regional channels won't be a problem which is a plus. I guess we'll find out soon enough, it's good to know the hardware itself should work when it's hooked up though!

Like the others say, it will work fine.

Interesting story: my dad moved to Spain and took his box with him, didn't tell Sky, got someone local to fit a dish, point it at the Sky satellite and bingo-bango it works. He still gets almost all the same channels.

He's not supposed to though. He's a bad man.

Yup, many folks get Sky abroad by using a card registered in the UK. Also a lot of commercial premises use a card registered at a residential address. Hence the other reason that the Sky want you to connect the box to a phone line.

But again, they're all very bad people
