Re: I've cancelled Sky and I'm chuffed!

I've been locked into a years contract on basic package. I wanted the net, which didn't work out. I love 24/lost/prison break which are all on sky one so it has it's uses till summer. I don't have a vcr/dvd recorder so sky+ has become very useful. Everyone uses it. If only they allowed it to be used without having to subscribe to sky.

Re: I've cancelled Sky and I'm chuffed!

My parents canceled Sky and are moving to Virgin. Sky is just a complete rip off at the end of the day. To cut a long explanation short, we have 2 boxes, Sky movies & sports. Combine the price of that with Virgin BB and telephone and they were paying £83 a month. What brought the change on was that my mother wants another box, so with Sky thats an extra tenner, so £93 per month .

Switching to Virgin means we get 3 boxes, one of which is a V+ box - hence HD albeit with very limited HD viewing, but HD is free (unlike sky which is yet another tenner a month and £300 for a box) so who cares, a superior on-demand service and no loss of signal when a gust of wind blows. Plus we will still be getting Sky Movies and Sports all for £73pm hence a £20 saving per-month. For the programming my parents watch, they aren't loosing any channels. In fact myself and my dad are gaining Setanta since it is part of the XL TV package unlike with Sky where Setanta is an extra monthly cost (again). The only thing I'll be missing out on is SG-Atlantis, but thats not worth £20pm.

Interestingly the Sky CS guy put up very little fight when they canceled.. It was almost like a "&%$* off then" attitude.

Like with Sky, Movies and Sports is extra (which my parents have included in their Virgin package for the price I stated - I'll edit my post to reflect this). Virgin doesn't have Sky One, 2, 3 or Sky News, plus some others, but like I said my parents don't watch those channels and I only watch Stargate on Sky One. Hence the channel loss to us isn't great.

I live in a house of 7 people. With that many people splitting the bill it becomes quite affordable.

But at what cost...so many fights over what we are watching happen.

    Damn girls always win too.

Re: I've cancelled Sky and I'm chuffed!

We have Sky, to be honest I've never really looked at Virgin TV. I remember NTL being usless for us with TV... we'd be cut off for days at a time due the them physically knocking the plug/switch in the box at the end of our road (well that we was the excuse anyway).

Sky on the other hand, although I like the UI of their boxes and always found it quite easy to use. Its true that you pay a big premium for it. Sky have cut us off on a multitude of occassions and after speaking to Scotland or India you have to pay for the time it takes them to get around to clicking a button to turn you back on.

My broadband is with Virgin and I'm happy with that. After looking at the difference in prices from some other users I may look into switching.

My girlfriend has Sky BB...does anyone else think its a load of rubbish?

Re: I've cancelled Sky and I'm chuffed!

I have Sky 16mb and I am quite happy with it. To be honest I will be keeping my TV until I can move to Be Internet in another 9 or 10 months at the moment I pay £36 for the lot so its not unaffordable however I really don't watch much on it and the TV is mainly used for games and DVD. I would rather get freeview but as I live right on the Tyne in the bottom of a valley I can't even get analogue so I will have to continue to use the sky box and dish for whatever free channels you get without subscription.

Out of interest, how much notice do sky need to terminate the contract? Is it something daft like 1 month written notice? I need to either move or cancel my sub for a couple of months due to moving house.

I think they're usually ok with that sort of thing, if you're re-subscribing anyway.

They're usually fairly helpful, well, as long as you're not cancelling !

When I moved they re-installed my stuff at our new house FOC.
