    Impromptu HDR effort

Was up at High Force yesterday and randomly exposed for the sky and the land without paying much attention. I remembered there was a hdr tutorial posted on here a while ago so spent about 15 mins very roughly putting this together. Not exactly a masterpiece but it was surprisingly easy to do so definitely worth giving a go if you're bored one day.

Impressive, though it'll look more HDR with a tad more saturation. Very nice pic nonetheless

looks nice. This HDR thing is quite interesting!

Now a sort of mini thread-jack as my attempt doesn't deserve it's own thread.

N.B. the varying exposures were all hand-held individual shots on my little compact, but it seems to have sort of worked Tried one with the wobbly bridge / tate-Modern too but it didn't come out quite as well

I've read some information on these types of pictures.

Is it just the case of taking two pictures. One with + 2 and one with - 2 exposure and then letting PS do it's magic?

Pretty much that. The hardest bit is putting it all together. I think I made the sky too blue but was trying to saturate to get the blueness of a polariser.I did another shot this evening which I'm working on now and will popup soon.

I think yours is maybe too dark Jamena, hdr is meant to be about vivid colours that you wouldn't normally see. The idea is pretty spot on though.

I was vaguely using the tutorial that has been posted on here before at http://stuckincustoms.com/2006/06/06/548/

There's no hard and fast rule though ...you can fiddle the settings. Over-saturating the colour (imho) can make it look too sort of "plastic" sometimes. Not always, and I do love the effect when done well. I guess it can depend somewhat on the subject matter.

HDR (or in this case probably more accurately described as tone-mapping I think?) is meant to retain local contrast so that you can see the detail in all areas despite the fact that the sky was rather brighter than under the bridge or over the rocks. levels and contrast are adjusted locally or something to create the illusion. As your eyes only focus on one bit of the image at a time your brain "sees" more detail than it would were the contrast/levels globally adjusted for the same high-contrast scene.

I agree that increasing the saturation is a common part of the HDR process but it's not strictly necessary. Also the images I took were all a bit dark. Poor little compact only goes so far on overcast days

p.s. if the scene has a massive dynamic range you can take more images. I found loads of pages out there on it, interesting stuff. And it can be done (badly but possibly) using only a cheap handheld compact

check out this page too (he used like 7 shots different EV settings for one of them

Yea, quite lilac here too. Especially to the left of the trees on the right hand side. Quite a lot of purple fringing on the trees in the top left too.

I'm not a huge fan but each to their own

I just randomly did it so handheld. Fit isn't perfect. I put the image together in about 15 mins so was a bit of a first effort. Redid it to make it slightly tider plus another one I did a few days ago:
