Just got my Transcend 16Gb x133 card

I ordered this from offtek.co.uk in readiness for a holiday next week. Lightning-fast turn-around, I had it in my hand barely more than 20 hours after I ordered it (and this is to Northern Ireland!)

It was a thrill to put it in my A100 and see a predicted 1045 RAW image capacity...that should do four days in Rome very nicely

I had been all set to order 2x8Gb versions of the same card from 7dayshop, but then I realised I'd left it too late - delivery can take 4-8 days with them.

I paid less than £30 for it, and I thought the £43 I paid last year for a Sandisk Extreme III 4Gb was a good price...it has a lifetime warranty, which I suppose is a good idea as it wouldn't be worth sending back to them by the time it fails (as all flash memory does with enough use).

I had a look at the faster x266 and UDMA cards, but in truth my camera and shooting style simply doesn't need the speed, and the price premium (>x2 the price) is too much.

If you have more than one card (You should always have at least two cards with you, just in case one gets lost or broken) then it's not a bad deal, but like Kalniel said if you do lose it it's going to be a very very big ouch.

let us know how it handles on holiday colmo.

I just got a second 4GB Extreme IV. I don't need the speed for my 350D but it will come in handy when I eventually upgrade to a 50D.

Re: Just got my Transcend 16Gb x133 card

I know, I was all set to get 2 x 8Gb cards instead, but this was the best deal available in the time-frame.

I've weighed up the pros and cons of one big card v two smaller ones, and while it's true that there's more risk of losing the lot with one big one, there's less risk of misplacing the spare card, because it's unlikely the big card will leave the camera. The biggest risk is losing the camera with the card in it (Rome has it's thieves) or card failure.

I'll have my 4Gb card as a backup, but I have nothing I can duplicate my photos to each day - funds are tight atm. I suppose I could burn discs in Internet cafes each day, though I suppose that has risks too (viruses attacking the card contents while in the card reader etc.)

Re: Just got my Transcend 16Gb x133 card

only time i'd increase the size of my cards from 6x 4GB is when i move to the 50D and i'll get 6x 8GB cards

1000 images on 1 card is asking for trouble imho

but then i've heard stories of people leaving their card wallet with their camera bag, to come back and find it gone! so i always have my cards in my cargo trouser leg pocket at all times (unless changing cards)

Re: Just got my Transcend 16Gb x133 card

I'll start shooting with the 4Gb card, and when it's full (probably by day 2), I'll switch to the 16Gb. I'll try to make backups to optical disc too, depending on what's available locally.

Re: Just got my Transcend 16Gb x133 card

you should get more than 1045 raw images on a 16gb card.

Ive got a 16gb SD for my D80 that gets just over 1500 raw files on. Although most cameras are rubbish at estimating the available exposures left.

I need to get some CF cards now as I have I just put all my nikon gear up for sale and brought a 50D

Re: Just got my Transcend 16Gb x133 card

I know it's an estimate - the A100 uses lossless compression on RAW files, so no two are exactly the same size.

It has been brought to my attention that the A100 might have issues writing more than 8Gb to a card. I'll have to test it, but there's nothing I can do about it at this stage.

Re: Just got my Transcend 16Gb x133 card

My 350D would probably estimate 999 for a 16GB card, but it does only have three digits for that in the LCD

Re: Just got my Transcend 16Gb x133 card

I ended up nearly half-filling this card. It's nice having a bit of extra room to play with, with no frantic deleting as you would approaching the limit of a smaller card.

you only need that sort of capacity if you're shooting MF, which in most cases requires a tethered hdd and so on....way over the top for an slr.
