As the title. I'm looking for a decent set of speakers to hook up to my PC with the emphasis on listening to music. Budget is £50.

Probably a set of Logitechs as close to £50 as you can get. If I were you though, I'd be looking at getting a 2nd hand amp/bookshelf speakers combo, you'll get a lot more for your money
Mind readers. However, I've been having a cow of a time trying to find said second hand stuff. Thanks for the advice!

Get a 2.0 set of Altec Lansing, Philips or creative gigaworks.

For sound quality, assuming you don't buy duds, I'd agree with the second hand route. For sheer convenience of PC speakers, I agree with the Altec recommendation. I have a set I've had for years and year, though to be honest, they're more 2.1 (separate sub) than 2.0, and I'm still happy with them. Having said that, sound preferences are very subjective. The only speakers I've tried and prefer are Klipsch Pro Media, but they weren't £50.
My current set are 2.1 Altec Lansing which I won on a PC Pro competition about 12 years ago. Think they were worth £150 and that was a lot of money back then when it was rare for PC speakers to cost more than a fiver I'm wondering if maybe my speakers are better than what I tihnk and that I'd be wasting my money unless I start to fork out big bucks.

Could well be. I know someone who has a set of Cambridge Soundworks that must be getting on 10 years, and they still sound great. If your current ones do still sound good, the next upgrade would probably be a seperate speaker/amp setup. You could maybe try a few sets in-store to see if it would be worth upgrading your own?
That could well be the same set I've got. They were certainly about that price at the time, and it was about then that I got them. I've heard louder since, but I like the sound of the Altec's. I like a pure, clean sound and while I like bass, I don't like it boomy. But as I said, it's very subjective. I guess a lot depends on the music you like, too.
