Street Photography

Hello everyone.

i am looking to try and do Street photography. i currently have a canon 400d and a Tamron 17-50mm. i am saving up for a 70-200mm F4L IS as i believe this will benifit me hugely for this purpose.

Do you guys have any advice on how to go about taking pictures in the street of people. My main aim is to capture peoples different emotions and activties going around the street.

i work near soho so there is huge potential for some interesting shots down here.

I am also going to shoot in the philippines again but this time doing street photography instead of landscape and again, that has some interesting potentials of some good shots there.

Be careful is my advice Few dodgey people in Soho as you'll probably know..if you're walking around with an expensive piece of kit I guess you'll look like a tourist. Out of interest, where do you work then?

I think you'd want to keep a low profile if doing street photography. Maybe a 'prime' pancake size lens might do the trick. I know a lot of the people on the NEX forums use wide angle lenses for their go about photos.

I have the Nikon D90 and a new 70-300 VR lens. You can sit quite a distance away so not to impose on your subject, and the VR keeps it nice a steady. I prefer ornithological shots, but i'm sure it would work just as well for snapping people in the street.

depends on your look on things..
you can shoot hip with wide angle (not looking through the view finder - i find it hit and miss)

or you can snipe with 70-200 | 70-300 | 100-400 etc and be more stand off and make sure you nail what you want to get..
