i like this pic because not only is the camera equipment he is using angled using an interesting tripod i have never seen, his own body is angles nearly the same as the camera housed in that tripod. Its as if him and the camera and tripod are an all in one object attached together.

    16

This one shows a unique top down perspective of a person working in the street. notice how his wheely bin thingy is alligned on a double yellow line and your not allowed to park their!

    Re: Summer 2011 Album

Too many to comment on them individually but I think the problem is you're just posting pretty much everything you've got. Take them, fine, but you can surely see that not all of them are keepers? For example #41, no offence at all and I don't want to discourage you, but it's doing nothing for anyone, it's just a tourist snap.

    Random ramblings now!
When you take people, get down to their eye level. Looking at #43 and #40, they'd be better if you were down lower.
Try not to have things obstructing the feature of your photo. In #40 you could have moved slightly left and his whole head would be in shot without being obstructed.
Look at the rule of thirds. A lot of your pics, the subject is central and it's just not as pleasing to the eye.
Make more use of DoF to pick out your subject from the surroundings. It's not always required but it would add to some of your photos. Your lens is f2.8, you can easily get a more shallow DoF than you're getting. I can't click on your flickr so I can't see what you're using.

My favourite is actually #42! Probably not what you want to hear since you're doing street photography, but I just like the swirls it's making.

Anyway that's all I have to say for now. As I said before, I'm not trying to discourage you, but try and take these things on board or you'll never improve Have a look at www.talkphotography.com and see what kind of things people are doing on there, then you'll get a better idea of what to aim for. Hope that helps!

Perhaps you should pick up 'understanding exposure' for a fab book on the basics.

    1) There's no such thing as 'you should shoot'

    2) low DOF is what htid is suggesting you do. And to do that you need a larger aperture.

    3) Larger apertures have small f numbers. F is a reciprocal - divided by the number. So likewise the larger the f number, the smaller the aperture, and the bigger the DOF. So you're doing the opposite to what you want to be doing.

    4) Sunny 16 is a just quick way of estimating how to get the right exposure. You have zero need to worry about that on a camera that has a light meter built in.

Mate i know what aperture and shutter speeds are. how? i bought that very same book over a year ago lol.

All im saying is that from what i have read, having a low aparture for street photography is good as you have a better chance of getting stuff in focus compared to having a high aparture. If i had all the time in the world to take these types of shots above, I could tweak the aparture high as i want, frame it properly and focus on the target and shoot.

In street photography you have GOT TO BE QUICK or you lose the moment/surprise. These are words from expert street photographers that i been reading and listening to via youtube.

true you have to be quick, nothing stopping you from framing and getting focus tho'

shoot around f/4 and look through your view finder when you take the shot - practice snapping the camera up to your face

nothing wrong with stepping into the shot either - and shoot wider than you need to and crop afterwards (will help with chopping legs off)

Ahh ok cool. Doesnt cropping reduce the sharpness and resolution of images?

How much could you crop and get away with it so to speak? crop a typical imagine over 50% is ok?

Depends on the lens and how sharp it is. I have no idea about yours but this is a 100% crop not resized from my 300mm f4. Ok it's not all sharp (beak for example) because I had a shallow DoF, but you can see that where it is in focus, it's pin sharp and that's 100% crop remember.

    Re: Summer 2011 Album

How much you can crop will depend on a few things but two key ones are the number of megapixels you have to play with, and the outlet for your photo (there are quite a few other factors too, but I won't go into these).

If you are not wanting to print to a large size (e.g. you just want to stick them online) and you have a good sensor - then you can crop massively. I have occasionally shown shots to people which are a 1/4 of the size or less of the full size on my 7D (~18mp) without obvious problems. I wouldn't print them large though, and I couldn't do that with my old 300D (6.3mp).

It's not something you necessary want to do but a) a good crop can improve a picture massively, b) playing around with cropping to see what looks good can help you compose the photo better in camera in the first place.
