    Using stereo speakers on 5.1

    Hi guys,

I have an Abit IP-35E with on board 5.1 surround sound. This worked great while I had 5.1 speakers but they've had to be replaced with some BOSE Companion 2 stereo speakers. My problem is that whenever I play back video which is encoded in 5.1 I only ever get one channel playing which is usually background effects and not dialogue etc.

I can't work out how to make my motherboard sound software (Realtek HD Audio v5.10.00.5366) realise I don't have 5.1 and just output all audio channels as stereo. The Realtek software seems limited as I can only have 5.1 selected. Windows has the Playback device set as the Realtek High Def Audio but if I configure it and play the test sound it tries to output as 5.1 and I can't select any Audio channels to have configured.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

    Control Panel > Sound > Playback > Speakers > Configure Speakers > Select 2.1 = OK

Playback device set as the Realtek High Def Audio but if I configure it and play the test sound it tries to output as 5.1 and I can't select any Audio channels to have configured.
ie. There is no list of audio channels (5.1, 2.1 or anything else). By default 5.1 is setup so when I run the Test sound it outputs through 5 channels.

Hmm, you could always uninstall the sound drivers and reinstall them.

Can't you just pick the layout in Windows control panel?

/\ what he said... forget the sound card control

Use the Windows settings for sound setup.
