    Pro-ject Turntables?

Decided to sell my old collection of albums gathering dust in the loft. Looked through them and decided to get a turntable instead. My amp doesnt have a phono stage so was looking at the Pro-ject Debut 2 which has a phono stage built in. Anybody any thoughts on Pro-ject decks?

Never read a negative review of one, although I've never tried one myself. I'd be surprised if it wasn't good though.

You might be able to get a listen at a branch of Sevenoaks Hi-Fi maybe?

Have heard lots of good things about the Debut 2, another options is the goldring GR1. You would need to add a phone pre-amp but
    http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/p...roduct_ID/1642
do the GR1 and pre-amp for £140. Free shipping I think as well. They do the standard debut II for £99.95 (non amp)

I'll give sevenoaks a go next time I'm up in Edinburgh. I like to listen to the stuff first, but keep on thinking I should buy from whoever gives me a listen, instead of putting my cynical head on. They look a decent outfit but never bought anything from them. I'll have a look at the GR1 as well, I was looking at a deck with the phonostage built in out of simplicitys (laziness) sake but it wouldn't be too much hassle to get a separate phono stage.

They may be reluctant to give you a listen, I don't know. A stylus does have a finite lifetime, and some stores are unwilling to wear them out on demonstations so that the value of their stock isn't decreased. For a sub £150 turntable though I doubt they'd be too worried about it, especially if you make it clear you won't buy without a listen.

I have had 7 oaks hifi match richers prices before, but it can be branch specific, I was in the 7 Oaks branch. I could be wrong on this but I think you get a 3 year gtee with all audio gear from then, not sure if thats still applicable

That wasn't a comment specific to Sevenoaks, but to hi-fi stores in general. I've never bought anything from Sevenoaks, I would have ordered a replacement stylus for my Arcam 77 cartridge from them but they discontinued it the month before I could afford to buy it.

    Rega Phono
    Rega Super-Bias MM-System

Very good value for the money. About. 950$

I would be reluctant to buy anything without having a listen first. The only downside to that is that I usually listen to other kit as well and hear something thats just right, before realising its about 50% more expensive.

The rega does look like excellent tackle, but I'd probably have to sell my records to raise the cash to buy it.

Thats unfortunate. Sometimes saving is better, than spending money on lower-end equipment just to have it earlier ;-)

What do u guys think about the Pro-ject Xpression? Was looking at the debut but will prolly sink in some xtra cash and get this.

Would i also be correct in assuming that i need the project speedbox to switch between 33 and 45 rpm?

    Thanks!

The only way to tell would be to try them. You heading in to the land of deminishing returns, I doubt it would sound twice as good as the others, but you may be able to justify it.

To change speed you normally have to move the belt, so lift platter and change the pulley on which the belt sits. Thers a .pdf of instructions with the goldring at superfi have a look there.
