You should be able to get a nice Jackson Dinky within that budget with a double locking trem. Failing that, try an Ibanez. Either of those choices will get you a guitar with an extremely thin neck which is better for hard playing (vs a thick neck for lots of bends)

a floyd ain't really neccasary for punk and different tunings on em are a bugger, would say something with a hardtail meself or a blockable trem. for £329 you can pick up a fender strat or tele, single coils may not have quite the punch your after.

All those fit what your after, would severely reccomend going to a good guitar shop and trying everything within your budget before you decide tho.

    What about something like this:

    Squier Standard Double Fast Strat
    [http://www.guitars.co.uk/acatalog/Stratocaster.html]

Any real problems with this? bearing in mind it will be my first guitar so i wont be able to tell the difference in the sound of a £100 and £1000 one

Yeah that looks great - don't expect to be able to use the trem at all though, because the moment you touch it you'll go out of tune. If thats not an issue, it should be a sound choice - 2 twins, slim neck, great! Similar priced alternative would be a Yamaha Pacifica - http://www.yamaha-europe.com/yamaha_...ars/index.html

Not a bad choice man, Got a squire strat for my first guitar and it still goes to band practices etc now. I would say though if its gonna be your first guitar to either not use the tremlo arm (it will go out of tune pretty quick) or consider something with a hardtail like the custom telecaster here - http://www.guitars.co.uk/acatalog/Telecaster.html or if you can find one a delogne signature model as they're the only hardtail humbucker equipped strat squire make iirc.

Yamaha Pacifica 112. THE best budget guitar available (if we're talking electric guitars). 'Bout 200 squid, iirc.

Squiers are OK, nothing special. Though the silver series of strats weren't actually that bad. However, compared to the 112, the build quality is tosh, electrics are badly soldered, pickups are terrible quality, machine heads don't hold tune well, bridge is low-quality and needs readjusting more often than it should, and you'd do well to replace the nut. Other than that - if you can find one of the Affinity strat packs with amp/cables/etc for £150, you've got a deal.

I'd still go for the 112 if I was a beginner though. You'd do well to listen to me.

I disagree man, the squier series over the last few years have come on leaps and bounds quality wise whereas All the 112's I've played have felt cheap and nasty very much like encore's and imo the pick-ups are quite weak sounding even on the models with humbuckers.

It does of course depend on how well they're set-up but my strat holds its tune for days with very little adjustment, I haven't played an affinity series and they're obviously not gonna be as good as the standards like mine due to the different materials for instance if you get on such as the customs etc they come with duncan desgin pick-ups which easily blow the 112's out of the water tone wise.

You've got to try what you are happy with, but the staying in tune is a big point obviously, so see if you get a linear amount of key change when you turn the key.
