Good interesting project! I originally had a laptop connected to my HiFi via an optical cable that streamed off my main computer. But something like this would be much more welcome and hidden.
Sonos is great, until you realise it doesn't support lossless formats, except where they've tied into Tidal and Deezer to make you spend more money.

I just seen the new Chromecast Audio They say it plugs into your speakers, but I am sure you can plug it in to your amp. Looks like a must have box and comes with a USB wall wart. Good deal, good deal, yes?

Interesting project and links to others - thanks for the interesting read.
I've been after some way of playing my media from my home server (using plex) via my stereo system, which comprises a basic amp and speakers to all intents and purposes.

Job done.
How far away from your Amp is your main PC?
I use an Asus Xonar STX (Amazing compared to even mid-range cards / Pi etc)
Then cable:

PC only sits about 2M away from the amp tho.
But the difference the soundcard makes is amazing.
