PC Audio To Hi-Fi Over Network.

What I would like to do is free my music stored on my computer and it's little speakers and play it over my Hi-Fi speakers.

I am looking for is a box which I'm not sure it even exist.
A box that plugs into my router and I can send music to it from my computer and plug in a phono lead into said box for it to go to my amp.

My friends keep saying Sonos, but I need something like that but it does not need speakers.

Also I do not want Bluetooth device.

So does anyone know of a network, LAN to Hi-Fi box?

Re: PC Audio To Hi-Fi Over Network.

mates got a WDTV Live that does this exact thing. last time I used it there was an option on the PC to 'play via WDTV' and it did, I was using windows media player.
    its only hdmi/optical audio though.

it was the older version of http://www.scan.co.uk/products/wd-tv...audio-miracast

Media Streamers it what your looking for.

I seen a few devices of this type but do they need a screen at the box end.

I should note that my amp does not have HDMI or optical input.

Very interesting, I do have a Pi which I poke now and then. I also found thsi site https://volumio.org/ but there is not such a good guide as the site you found. Also the first step on Volumio is to download the software = alarm bells to me.

I don't think it does need a screen, you can control it via the PC. but I have used it very little. and they do seem to be more for video purposes than just audio.

you are better off fiddling with the pi option though, sounds like its much better suited, as I haven't seen a cheaper end streamer with phono option.

I have a Netgear Media Streamer going spre, its the MP101, does what you say on the tin. Plug it into the network, install the streamer software on the PC, set a shared directory and you're off. Select music on the front panel of the unit, no need for a separate computer or screen.

Re: PC Audio To Hi-Fi Over Network.

squeezeboxes were awesome for this but since they got bought out by Logitech, they've become quite hard to get hold of.

They played every format I threw at them including FLAC and a few other lossless codecs but they are hard to find now.

Re: PC Audio To Hi-Fi Over Network.

raspberry pi and a hifiberry DAC, volumio or rune audio on the SD card.
bob the music on usb, or share it from your computer.

you get a handy little webpage to play the music from. pick the right hifiberry and you don't even need an AMP.

I have a Denon PMA-510AE at the moment, which I like as it has a built in phono stage, and the amp still has a lot of life They do go for quite good money on ebay, but I would still need to find a good chunk of money for a full networked amp. My good lady would not be happy.

One question I have always been scared to ask is. What is the AC out on the back for? I know you can plug in other equipment into the amp, but where do you get the plugs from?

Looks like a typical non-ground european "schuko" plug

I guess the purpose could be to minimise hum from ground loops and so that when the amp is off, the other kit also has its power cut.

Re: PC Audio To Hi-Fi Over Network.

I have had my Pi hooked up now for a couple of days. It was all straight forward in getting it all setup using Pi MusicBox and had all the parts needed (once I had looked for them)

All of my iTunes music copied across to a USB stick and the interface screen is a tab on Firefox. I had it set up with a LAN cable to start with but the only one I could find was about 20m long so went over to a old WI-Fi dongle, that I did believe not to be working, worked great. Setting up the password, network for it was as easy as adding the info to the settings file.

When playing MPEG-4 files from iTunes it all sounds good, even just using the Pi's own on board sound. There is also the option to have internet radio, which I used to use a lot. But now my favorite station is just adverts that cut off the start and end of the songs.

You can also stream web based music services, I am not signed up to any so could not test that part.

All in all, I am very happy. It does all I want, it's unobtrusive and cost no extra money.

I am now thinking of the best way to copy my vinyl to my computer.
