Another box though. My living room TV is old and can't do Netflix natively. It is plugged into a Wii-U which has an excellent Netflix client, and a Blu-ray player which was quite cheap and comes with a fairly decent Netflix client. The new TV is just so much easier, it seems the kids would rather cram into the tiny box room that has the LG in it.
I hadn't thought of it that way.
A guy at work has just bought a new TV with only 2 HDMI inputs, which I'm not sure I'd cope with. Maybe if you've got a smart TV and a Blu-ray player you don't need a separate streaming device, but you might want a games console, or PC port, or etc.
Seems I'll be shackled to boxes for a little while longer yet.

This should help give you an idea what to look for even if some aren't in your price range.
PS. It was hdcp 2.2 that I was thinking of wrt to HDMI. No hdcp 2.2 on a HDMI port, no UHD Bluray playback when it becomes available later this year.

That's what I was getting at when I suggested g8ina identify what he needs, versus what he fancies.
It may be (and apparently is, to you, and maybe g8ina) that Netflix support is a necessity. To me, it isn't. My current set has a Netflix capability (as do two HDRecorders) but I've not the first notion of whether they work, or work well/badly, by virtue of never having tried them.
For you, it's essential. For me, irrelevant. For g8ina? That's what he needs to decide, because if his needs include that, my 'ideal' 4k feature set wouldn't suit him at all. Though, my ideal TV feature set wouldn't include 4k either, so there we go.
This really comes into the same sort of category as recommending hifi speakers .... you have to pick according to your ears, musical tastes and the type of sound you like.
High end 1080p or (insert 4 letter word) 4k.
I know where my money would be going.
Dont need Netflix, TV i-player types would be nice although I have that in my BR player, a big screen is my main need as my eyes are really starting to feel the strain on a 32" set. 4k was a nice sounding option that was in the price range, but as abaxas says, a decent 1080p big screen might just fill the need
I picked up a 40 Inch Sharp TV (1080p) on Amazon for 180 a week ago. Picture quality is great (matches the Panasonic in the living room in my opinion), just doesn't have the unnecessary bloat of apps etc. I'd go cheap 1080p, and then upgrade in 2 years or so.

My understanding of the JVCs is that they use Vestel panels which are generally considered to be pretty crap. Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder... What about a Hisense? They're a Chinese brand that seems to give very good value for money. Certainly meant to be a step up from Vestel panelled TVs.

Hisense certainly do give good value for money & are well regarded and now own the Sharp brand as well (so that's what Mr Rockcliffe actually bought). I'd certainly prefer them over JVC initially. But at that kind of budget I'd be inclined to stick with what you have unless whatever you are considering proves to be a big step up when you go to view it.

I personally wouldn't go for a 'Smart' TV.
Get the best TV you can and get a FireTV stick. I am VERY impressed with mine. It does Netflix, Amazon Prime, Plex (XBMC alike), iPlayer, ITV Player, 4OD etc etc etc.....
It's pretty responsive, and cheap as chips.....
Thanks guys I really appreciate all the input Richer Sounds do the HiSense, and other reviews say they are good too.
This one then ?

If you can stretch to it then it's certainly well featured but obviously try before you buy and some of the comments say the menu lags so that would suggest that the cpu is a bit weak but for the money I doubt you'll find better specs. Also 2 of the 4 HDMI ports are HDCP 2.2, so that's good for when you get a UHD blu-ray player and that Nvidia Shield you've been telling yourself you need.
