I know I'm late in joining this discussion but I have only just spotted this thread.
My opinion is that if you have any reasonable quality cable, unless the distances are really big you'll need an oscilloscope to spot any difference in the signal, let alone by ear. 15 or 20 years ago it would have made a difference. But the quality of cables and equipment is good enough as a whole now that it's unlikely to effect anything.
Same goes with buying any quality cables . I doubt that anyone would be able to spot the difference in picture quality between a good £40 scart lead and a £150 or more scart lead. Unless they had a very very big, top of the range screen and other equipment to match.
That is my thought on the subject anyway. By the way if you do want to buy really expensive cables don't let that stop you from buying them from us.
