Its loud ?
maybe cos when it's at a decent volume, you can pick out not only the dynamics properly, but you get a better sense of tuning and pitch. PLus of course you hear the small bits in the background that make the whole thing more 'busy', fill it out and generally make it sound more colourful and alive....

Sounds even better when you are part of a band and it's going well

I much prefer studio quality music over live music but yes when you turn it up, the dynamics of the songs are heard better (With a decent system that can handle a bit of power anyway )

loud music makes you happy, relieves stress and postpones aging, let the neighbours know!Q: Does music have a role in endorphin production?
A: Music has always exerted powerful physical and psychological effects on humans, but scientists have only recently made the connection of different types of music with the production of endorphins. Although music affects each individual differently, research has shown that classical, rock, heavy metal, and even Musac produce specific physical and psychological effects. By judiciously choosing the types (and pieces) of music we most enjoy, we can enhance endorphin production in our everyday lives.
that came from http://www.healingsprings.com/ENDORPHINS.htm
Its a well known effect. One of the things that can be used to cheat on supposedly fair listening tests. Listeners will always prefer the louder system.
Just out of interest have you ever seen a good live band? Live music by far tops studio albums for me, and yes the louder the better.Originally Posted by Howard

OT, one of best gigs i've been to was The Psychedelic Furs at Glastonbury in the 80's. About 3 hours of sweat. Closely followed by Ian Dury funking hard.
I also saw Hazel O'connor in Bristol at the Bier Keller with about 80 people at the gig, she blew everyone away. I was so close to the "stage" that i actually untangled her microphone lead for her and she gave me the thumb up!
Yeah music, the louder the better. If you can't feel it it's not loud enough
YEh I meant quality. And no I haven't seen many good live bands. But I do know what it's like and the main attraction there is the great atmosphere

The trouble is you become accustomed and dont get the hormonal kick. So you should only really pump it up occassionally

Also, it seems to me that when speakers are on quite quietly, sort of to provide ambience and mood to the place, the music does lack in some of the detail you get when you turn them up a bit louder. I guess this makes sense though, when you consider how muh more precise the tiny tweeter movements need to be to get a good detailed sound at a really low volume.
My theory is that, in the same way that eating a sugar cube gives your tastebuds a more pleasurable sensation than dissolving it in a glass of water and drinking it, stimulating your ears with loud music is more enjoyable than just having it on quietly. Just as you can overdo sweetness though (try eating a saccharine sweetener tablet) once music gets too loud it hurts your ears.
