I've never really been into the 'music scene'. Whatever few MP3s I have are things I have picked up from here or there and liked the sound of, without any real interest or knowledge about the bands. That being said, one band which has been a reccuring theme for me is 'The Dandy Warhols'. I know not why, it's just one band I associate with music I like, and it was for this reason I consented to go and see 'DiG!', a documentary film following two aspiring bands, The Brian Jonestown Massacre and the aformentioned Dandys.
Or so it's pitched. The film for me was more about one person, the egocentric Anton Newcombe, lead singer of BJM. The Dandys have a supporting role, and there is a good deal of material here about the music industry, but its Newcombes bizzare mix of artistry and insanity which fascinates and appauls. It's a brutally honest film, but highly entertaining, as BJM self-destruct and the Dandys make it big. Newcombe is portrayed as a disturberd musical genius, self-destructing in an attempt to preserve his integrity, but risking his sanity in the process.
Worth watching, even for non-music fans.
