hd ready is a licensed logo spec, containing:

many screens violate the spec, or abuse it heavily - for example, most plasma screens are 1024x1024, which is technically tall enough for the 720 height requirement, but can't display a 1280x720 signal. or some screens (medion) have assorted connectors for HDTV, and an HDTV resolution, but don;t actually display the input signal as HDTV under any circumstances - e.g. (HD) component is converted to SD then displayed.
hd compatible is usually a way to avoid paying the EICTA fees for using the hd ready logo (or a screen which predates the logo, or a scren which isn't actually HD but the manufacturers want a quick sale)
