don't think it's properly HD - it doesn't say whether it supports HDCP on the HDMI connector (where no news is usually bad news), and it specifically states on the dabs page that it can only do HDTV resolutions via the component connectors (HDTV must be able to do it via the DVI/HDMI or component).

it's a reasonable resolution for an xbox360, but it's not a decent hdtv.

so, again, you've got to make it clear what you WANT. if you *really* want to spend £500 on a new tv, then fine - but it'll be a really inferior hdtv, if it even IS hd. if you just want an optimum setup for a 360, it depends entirely on where & how you're likely to play your games

do you NEED a new tv? do you NEED a new monitor?

if the thing about only doing HD over component is false, then yes, it's an HD-Ready set - though I'm unconvinced it'd make for a great TV.

    your call.

i still don't know what you want - a tv, a monitor, or just something that will make a 360 look good

Basically, this is for my friend.

He is getting it to go with his new xbox 360, but he obviously wants to be able to watch tv on it (it will be in his room)

    This looks interesting

That big screen has got to make up for the crappy picture and build quality!

    Nooo

    It really won't

Size does not make up for bad image quality. Spend the same cash on a lovely Samsung 26" HDTV, much better picture and far more aesthetically pleasing for your friends room if he is as superficial as me

Seriously if hes getting a 360 then definately get a HDTV and not that horrible cheap thing. My dad wanted to get one and i had to convince him otherwise by showing him a decent HDTV

    so he wants tv.

considered one with built in freeview (idtv), instead of normal analog? seems silly to buy an analog tv now when the signal's being cut in a few years' time, and there's already lots of nice content on freeview

if his budget is £500, then my strong recommendation is not to spend any money - i couldn't recommend anything in good conscience, any more than i could recommend a pc chips motherboard or geforce 5200 to people on small budgets.

as for the samsung, i got mine here

not HD - has no DVI or HDMI

seriously, you will *NOT* find a respectable HDTV for £500 at this point in time. an unrespectable one, a not-really-hd-but-close-enough one, an argos own brand one, but not a real, decent, respectable tv manufacturer HDTV.

if your friend wants HDTV, it's either saving more cash, or the tv equivalent of a PC Chips board.

oh, and it's probably worth pointing out that most of the cheap sets you link are 15:9 (1280x768) not 16:9 (1366x768), meaning any widescreen image will be distorted (squashed horizontally by about 10%, or black borders at top & bottom)

not sure how you can call someone a retard when DirectHex has mentioned in response to your personal posts (I counted 4 times) the specs for HDTV and the fact that you willl struggle to find a respectable HDTV for under £500, yet you still post

    "how about this"

    "how about that"

which is direct contradiction to what you have just been told.
    It is Inevitable.....

    ikona, no

Ok i have read up on HDTV now, sorry directhex (ikona you can go away, i have asked you before not to post in my threads)

Also, ikona, directhex has not stated the full specifications of HDTV in this thread (im not complaining, i didnt ask him to!)

Please annoy some other people, you remind me of the comic shop guy from the simpsons.

many screens violate the spec, or abuse it heavily - for example, most plasma screens are 1024x1024, which is technically tall enough for the 720 height requirement, but can't display a 1280x720 signal. or some screens (medion) have assorted connectors for HDTV, and an HDTV resolution, but don;t actually display the input signal as HDTV under any circumstances - e.g. (HD) component is converted to SD then displayed.

hd compatible is usually a way to avoid paying the EICTA fees for using the hd ready logo (or a screen which predates the logo, or a scren which isn't actually HD but the manufacturers want a quick sale)
