    Stupid Ipod Pos

so ive had my ipod 12 months and about a week, and suddenly it stops working and ive found out its a hard disk failure - no way of booting the device to wipe it and sort it out.
so the only thing i could do to fix it would be send it to apple... now, that would be okay, if they didnt want £170 for the pleasure of swapping it for me.. robbing barstools.
    what i have is a 4g 40gb, which i bought last xmas...

im wondering if i could take it into the apple store in birmingham and get them to swap it...

surely this device which at the time cost me £300 should stop working after only a year.

i mean, sure they have battery defects if you dont look after the way u charge it, but a battery is a battery, they have a shelf life, surely the hdd shouldnt stop after only 12 months!

    would i have a case?

i mean, ive babied this thing since i got it, its not been abused or dropped.

    what can i do?

    Misty

I had this problem with my 3g iPod, managed to get it to work if I pressed Menu and Play for quite awhile, but that was only a temperary solution just so I could get my music off, which didn't work lol

But I do agree with you they are robbing barstools thats why I went to my trusty iRiver

Yes, because Apple make the hard drives. I'd put this one down to bad luck.

My mate had the same problem in under a year and because he got it as a present he had no receipt. Do other manufacturers have any better policies?

I dont know why Apple customer put up for this??!!!

For years they have been charging twices as much for their pc that have half the performance of a PC. Apple always rip off their customers and when it comes to repair Apple product they charge you half of what you paif for the item!

I'd never buy anything Apple just for that reason! The new Creative or Sony Player is the way to go!

I would take some legal advice on this. A warranty may be for 12 months, but that does not mean you cant get a free replacement after a year, especially if its only a week or so. Retail law states that a product must be fit for the use it was intended for and last a reasonable length of time. I worked for Dixon's fr a couple for years when i was a student and many people got their products replaced after 12 months, the 12 month thing is not set in stone (it just mean that you will have to deal with apple dirrect, rather than the shop you got it from i think).

Also, have you bought any of your music from itunes? If you have you will need to stick with apple forever because those files wont play on a non-apple product.

well, i went into the apple store with my ipod in birmingham, all boxed up and stuff. and waited in the cue for the genuis bar, showed the guy what was wrong and he went and found the same model but either serviced or brand new... it was OEM packaged, but wrapped up and looked like new.
there were a few problems like being out of warranty due to the guy i bought it off (brand new) registering it in his own name, but the guy helped me out and sorted out a new ipod.

same model and everything, so i didnt get a free upgrade, but i swapped an old out of warranty (by a few weeks) ipod for a working new one. Im happy.. the guy could have told me what he told the last 3 people before me; that they have a nice paperweight, that is all. but he helped me out.

Apple staff arnt as bad as people say, in my experience.

I'm glad it worked out for you, I guess like anywhere if the person you are dealing with is decent and you speak to them nicely, but confidently things can be done.

You could of said that its expected life is higher than 12 months, when you pay £300 you expect it to last longer than 12 months. As such you should of been entilted to repair, anyone googling this, ask your trading standards person, but its dependant opon your retailer really.

As for apple don't make the HDD. Well apple don't let other people make apple computers because they "want to control user experiance from begining to end". They choose the HDD, and as such are responsible.

But yes, i do hate apple!
