How do I go about conerting these files as my new DVD player will only play Divx correctly and it loses sync on Xvid files.

Xvid is suppose to be more compatible than Divx.
I suspect the xvid file is encoded using qpel or gmc, or the player simply doesn't like VBR MP3 stream (more likely)?
Try virtualdub to re-encode, extract the audio track, convert it to CBR then add it back to the xvid file and direct stream copy.

My current divx player has packed in for some reason and looking to get a Pioneer DV393 pretty soon, although if it dont support xvid I wont bother as most(if not all) of my stuff is xvid.
Read the guides on doom9.net.
It's not the easiest thing in the world to do and you may well decide it's not worth the time or hassle.
