What audio tool to cut mp3's?

    Would appreciate some advice please.
I want to be able to simply cut mp3 and save snippets (to play on a phone).
Has to be free and simple - it's not me that'll be doing it but my brother.
I would have thought that virtualdub would work, but no joy (apparently mp3's are an unknown file type - so it really is a video only tool!).

    Thanks in advance

mp3direct cut might be a useful alternative although I second the recommendation of Audacity.

I use mp3directcut. Takes a few moments to get to grips with, but does the job well.

^Yep, thats the 2 i would suggest. The good thing about mp3directcut is that you can cut up mp3's without any re-encoding and therefor not lose any quality. It's a useful app, but Audacity would be better for the job of making ringtones. You wont need high bitrate stereo tracks for ringtones, so you may aswel use audacity to do it and reduce the bitrate/channels etc to save storage space on the phone.

Audacity is a superb free app considering.

I use it as a backup audio editor.. or did, since it won't work on an Intel Mac

I've always used mp3directcut to make ringtones, and would recommend it.

I'm going to give that there Audacity a go now too .
