So should I put both the little switches to "M" and not "AF"?

Yup, and set the focus to infinity if you can, if you try to use AF at night it simply won't work

I nipped outside with my tripod just too late - it was still dry, but by the time I'd got everything set-up, it started to rain so I had to leg it back inside again..
