    Screen burn on LCD's ?

Bought a new TV yesterday, a Samsung 32" LCD. Very happy with it, great picture and the Xbox looks awesome on it.

In the manual it says not to let a static image/Logo stay on the screen for more than 2 hours or this may cause screen burn, and if doing so to lower the brightness and contrast. (there is a gaming mode that does this auto) Is the really the case? What if I want to leave MTV on for 5-6 hours in the background or play WoW on it for a long period of time.

I never thought this was an issuse for LCD TV's, are they prone to screen burn. Should I be worried about damaging my new telly, anyone else had this?

    Thanks for any help.

Not exactly prone to it but it does happen, it's called temporary image persistance and is not often permanent.

    Hi Trash Man,

Screen Burn shouldn't be possible on LCD TV's, that's one of their advantages over Plasma screens.

I can confirm that I have a 26" Philips LCD that I use with my PC, I have it on pretty much all the time and the desktop or anything has never shown any signs of image retention, let alone burn.

I have a plasma screen hooked up to my 360, and that sometimes shows a few signs of image retention after 5-6 hours but no signs of burn in whatsoever.

You have nothing to worry about with your LCD, enjoy it! Your 360 games will look fab on it!

    Sorry, that's not correct.

LCD type displays exhibit this same phenomenon, although the mechanics of the image retention are different. In the case of LCD displays, the liquid crystal molecules which convert the white backlight to color as it passes through the membrane lose their rotation elasticity. In this case they are unable to fully return to their normal rotation state. As in the case with plasma displays, this is usually transient and will self correct after a period of off time or dynamic content. However, in severe cases it can become permanent.

    I have been corrected.

Thanks for the useful post. I used the term "shouldn't be possible" cause I wasn't 100% certain but was going off personal experience.

No screen burn-in has long been touted as one of advantages of LCDs over plasmas & CRTs, to the point where 'everyone knows it' so you're far from alone in thinking that (I thought it for years until someone who knew better told me otherwise).

It's always a surprise when something I've always 'known' turns out to be complete codswallop (a greatly underused word in my opinion ).

Thats definitely screen burn but thats over a year of usage. I tried to reverse it but it doesn't seems to fade very easily.

A couple of the screens where I used to work managed to get the login box 'burnt' into the screen, not sure how long it took, but it must have been a period of about 6 months or more (not continuously, but regularly, as the login box doesn't move)

Are we talking TFT's or TV's?

Just wondering how concerned I should be about playing game on it, or even watching WS films as in the manual it states the black bars can also cause burning.

    I have a load of LCD's

    including :

    3 x 19" HP f1904, 1 15.4" widescreen laptop and a 32" Samsung HDTV.

Had the monitors for nearly 2 years now, and the TV for around a year and no sign of burn in yet. Would'nt worry about it.

I would not worry about it to much. Obvisouly don't leave your screen on all day with the Sky logo's in the same place as this may cause problems.

Manufactures should make this kind of problem more known about though so people don't get caught out.

the only time i've seen screen burn on any screen in the last few years has been offshore when they have an obsession with SkyNews. I've seen CRTs, RPs and Plasmas with the tickertape etc. very noticable along the bottom

Re: Screen burn on LCD's ?

I am very concerned about the possible burn-in by digital on-screen graphics to my (expensive) lcd television. ITV-HD has a bright ident - as do many others - which just sits there for the duration the channel is selected. Do we really need to be reminded of which programme we are watching? Most, if not all, people with a modern receiver can use their remote to pull up a guide which not only tells you which programme you're on but also provides you with information about what you're currently viewing, what's on next and what's on all the other channels as well. Then there's always the ubiquitous 'Radio Times' and 'TV Times'.

In the event of serious burn-in, I wonder if there is a case for compensation from the Programme Contractors? After all, we've managed without these wretched things since the inception of television. It can, it would appear, cause permanent damage to the screen of your TV in hours; a TV which could have cost hundreds of pounds - and there's nothing we can do about it.

Also I find the graphics are becoming progressively more intrusive on the picture content and spoil my overall viewing experience. How do you folks feel about it all?

Re: Screen burn on LCD's ?

my mum has had an LCD TV for about 2 years now and her picture is really poor due to her location. All channels have this odd line through them. We recently upgraded her areal to improve the picture but sadly the strange line has now burnt the screen on her TV.

Re: Screen burn on LCD's ?

As others have said, I believe LCD screen burn is a reality but it generally takes a long time for it to occur. I've never noticed it on my PC monitors (and I've had several for many years each) or TV's, but I'm only on the second LCD TV at the moment. It does get a lot of HTPC use and it displays a mostly static default Windows 7 screen for hours on need at times but haven't noticed any burn in (yet).

Re: Screen burn on LCD's ?

we could always check with the OP - if they still have the TV it'll be 3.5 years old by now...

tbf, that was a lengthy and interesting post, but none the less a first post on a 3.5yr necro thread always raises an eyebrow...

The only places I've ever really seen significant burn in has been on public displays, which I guess are on 24/7. I would imagine that a normal usage pattern - with lengthy off periods and regular channel switching - would be a lot less damaging. Unless you're watching the same channel for 16hours a day every day I doubt you'd have a problem - and if you are watching the same channel 16hours a day every day then I think screen burn is going to be the least of your problems...
