    Phase 3: Potential Problems

I have been thinking about problems which I could face with this install throughout however I have a couple which I thought I would share with you.

This house is fairly old - so the walls are an interesting problem. They are a thick layer of plaster and then wooden slats behind it - the old style of stud walls.

I want to mount a 32" 17KG LCD to this wall - and I don't want it falling off, a tough task I would say.

There are a number of solutions I have looked at and not all are the same.

This is your typical mount, as you can see it can be tilted - but gravity will naturally make the panel lean out and could put strain on the wall. I don't want this panel to a) get damaged or b) pull the wall down.

Samsung say you should get a VESA 200*200 - the above unit is a 200*100, whilst this is supported why not just get the next one up and make sure that the panel stays on the wall.

The other issue is I don't want to actually spend a lot of money on it - some of these go for £300+!

Another option is something like this:

Which looks like it will be a lot stronger - and less likely to put pressure on one point of the wall.

    or this:

To make it ideally strong I could drill holes through the wall (straight in to the walk in wardrobe, and put threaded pieces of metal through - with nuts at each end - so if it wants to fall of it has to take the entire wall with it. The only potential issue? it is a messy lot of work to do - and if you get the mount in the wrong place you have a lot of patching up to do.

    Another solution: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=311460

The other potential issue is that the TV uses a Kettle lead which is on an angle - this won't fit through my 40mm hole which I have in the wall - I guess the easiest solution is just to lop the plug off and rewire it

David, what i didwith my plasma in the living room and LCD in the bedroom (not yet fitted) was mount a 18mm thick plywood board to the wall first, them fix the screen mount on that. This spreads the load on the plaster wall (mine are lath and plaster, about 100 years old or so).

Have a look at this thread to see how the plasma is mounted:
    http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=60438

this is where i got my plasma mount, they are in glagow so i picked it up when i bought the screen:
    http://www.rs100.co.uk/index.php?cPath=30_55

and i think this is the LCD mount i have (although there is no picture)
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=159175

but i'm thinking of replacing it with a flush mount as this is about 6" deep

Thats the word - Lath and Plaster, thats what my wall is.

So the Plywood would work right?

There was a TV on the wall before - which I have just weighed - 9KG so 17 isn't too bad.

Is this the one you have?

thats the one, extremely well constructed. I don't really need the tilt part of it, but in my room, at it's least tilted, it is a perfect angle (you cannot get it flat with the tilt in place). The tilting version has exactly the same front plate, so you can buy it, only mount half, and have it flush ready to be re-fitted tilted if you think you might need it.

The setup for my LCD is pretty simple. Normally the studs (the vertical beams) are 18" appart, but in this part they happened to be 12", perfect. I cut a 12" square piece of 18mm ply (B&Qs finest) and fixed that to the studs with three 60mmx5mm screws on either side and then three down the midle into rawl plugs. Nothing is going to move that board. Mounted the back of the LCD bracket onto the top of the board as the mounting holes on the screen are quite high. I would post a couple of pics, but i'm a couple of hundred miles into the north sea right now

Yeah the price doesn't seem that bad.

Thing is - there seems to be so many differnet makes and models.

    Who actually manufacturered yours?

the plasma mount is manufactured for RS100.

From chatting to the guy in the shop in glasgow, they have them laser cut, shaped and coated (can't remember if it is paint or powder coat) locally for them to their own design. The guy recons they are one of the biggest manufacturers of these in the UK. I think they were designed mainly for the DJ/Club/Bar/commercial market, but most of their customers for them are domestic now.

If the plaster is that thick, have you concidered removing some and embeding the screen into the wall? If done ok it can look incredible swish. You should have something better to anchor the screen to as well then.

Too much effort - and not what I want to do

In theory it is totally do-able - since I have a gap in the middle between the 2 walls but not worth the potential problems.

    Yeah....

... I got the panel today and it is thicker than I was hoping for but nevermind.

I will get the plywood and the bracket sorted this week
