Re: IPS Monitor for PC gaming?

In a similar situation, looking for a 24" monitor for gaming and some photo editing.

Was originally going to go for the 2412M but then thought about the Samsung S23A700D 23" (VAT back ATM so ~£205) or the BenQ 24" that was the other option in Cat's list. Now I'm not to sure thought about getting the 2410 but as it is an older panel that put me off a bit.

Now I don't really know which one to go for (read of ghosting issues on the Dell 2412) and don't know which way to look. Not that bothered about 3D although it would be nice to have (although not Nvidia only as I have a 6950), same with monitor USB ports (nice to have but not really needed).

Re: IPS Monitor for PC gaming?

I have just purchased a LG IPS235, it arrived yesterday. No dead pixels, colours are nicely setup though I turned the brightness down slightly. So far I am rather happy with it, though I've not had time to game. I've got a tonne of deadlines this month. I may have a sneaky couple hours over the weekend for a break.

I know that almost everywhere I've looked and on several forums the Dells are very highly praised and suggested. I use a 30" version at uni and it really is a nice monitor and rather well built. But that is a stupidly huge screen! I think if I had the extra funds available I would have considered a 23" or 24" Dell, as the stand is rock solid and the monitor can rotate 90° (I've never used that feature, but I'm tempted to try it).

I was seriously looking for a 24" though after getting this 23" I think I've hit the sweet spot for size (at least for me).

So while I am incredibly happy with my LG if I was to buy another monitor and I'd go for a U2312HM.

edit: just remembered, a factor I took into consideration when looking for a monitor, apart from a limited budget, was the bevel thickness. For a future expansion of multiple monitor set up. The bezel on this LG is 17.5mm or so. Not the thinnest but not terrible. Not sure on the Dell, the 30" has a rather thick bezel on it, strangely enough I don't really notice it when looking at that monitor.

Re: IPS Monitor for PC gaming?

hnosyalnif, especially if you're talking about a new monitor, I wouldn't let its age put you off (sorry that's not an instant help!). There's a lot of people out there still holding on to monitors that they've been using for years, simply unable to find anything that gives a comparable image, the same features or build quality.

As it happens, whether it was my mistake or an incorrect link, I read a review of the older Dell a few hours ago. From features to the apparent image quality, it seemed to be the better display when compared to the 2412M. It takes your eyes to know what's good or acceptable but as I said, I wouldn't discount any option because of age.

If you're looking for points to whittle down your choices, what about the video ports that you need? VGA? DVI? DisplayPort? HDMI...? Do you need a good stand or one that's flexible in terms of height, tilt and so on?

Re: IPS Monitor for PC gaming?

    Hi Andy,

Stand doesn't need to be too flexible as it only really needs to point up/down, little bit left to right. Only is really view from the front.

I still do like the 2410 from Dell but I'm still not sure it is best suited to gaming (yes it is great for Photo editing but I do more gaming and tv/movie watching than photo editing at the moment) but it is still probably the best on offer.

Just trying to see what other options I have. The Samsung 23" with inbuilt 3D is a tempting buy but not sure how they all compare. I know what you say when you have a monitor for years, my current 17" is getting on for 6 years old, hence the upgrade.

Port wise not bothered. My 6950 does HDMI and DVI (and I have VGA-DVI adapters). Ideally it would be HDMI or DVI as long as it runs full HD though, not that bothered.

Re: IPS Monitor for PC gaming?

I've read of some people having ghosting issues which is why I was holding off on the 2410M, it was my choice originally after reading your thread before you got it Phage.

I'm not sure I can justify the extra £100 for the 2410 (nor do I really need it).

Samsung 23" is still very tempting especially with VAT back making it around £200.

Not sure the BenQ is worth the extra over the 2412M - for the 3D but don't think it will work with my 6950 anyway and I don't really need it...

Well i game heavily on a Dell u2311 23" and use 2 LG ips screens (the first ones with the tilt and swivel stands) as the eyefinity surrounds and have no problems with ghosting on any of them.

The LG's are definatly worth the money.

How thick is the bezel on that Dell compared to the LG's, I'm guessing you have your Dell as the central/main monitor with the LG's to either side? If you were to replace one of your monitors would you replace the Dell with an LG or a LG with a Dell, or a like for like thus keeping your monitor setup as it is with 1 Dell and 2 LGs? I apologise if it does not sound like a daft question.

Re: IPS Monitor for PC gaming?

Good to know most have no issues with ghosting. Guess the decision comes down to 3D or no 3D and the various other uses - i.e. which is better for photo editing (probably the Dell). The two would then be the Samsung 23" 3D monitor vs the Dell 2412M or something else but there isn't much else in that price range...

My friend just mentioned the Dell 2412M as i'm looking for a new screen. I was looking at getting the Hazro hz27wc, but not too sure about that now considering I only have a HD6950 gfx card. I have one question..........would I be able to dual monitor the Dell and my current samsung 22" ? It would just be for general use, and I would use the Dell for gaming.

Re: IPS Monitor for PC gaming?

That should be possible Aled. Won't work for multiscreen gaming but for desktop use should be fine. Was thinking of doing something similar with my old monitor when I finally get around to getting a new one...

Spent some of the evening today looking into more depth at this dilemma I've been having. Basically decided I don't really need 3D (so not the BenQ or Samsung). I do a fair bit of photography and photo editing and so it has come back full circle to the Dell's. Now to decide whether I should drop the extra £120 or so for the 2410 over the 2412M, leaning towards not needing to. Would be used for gaming (mainly FPS - BF3 and others) so that is the main sticking point really.

Phage, I know you have said that the 2412M is good for gaming from your point of view. Has that opinion changed in anyway?

That being said anything will be an improvement over the crappy 17" 1280*1024 that I'm using at the moment. So both of the Dell's would be good, just ever so slightly tempted by the 2410. Going to be using it has a monitor for a while so would like to be as long lasting as possible (current one is getting on for 6/7 years old)...

It might be a bit odd as the cursor won't map perfectly - i.e. when you move from one screen to the other it may not appear at the height you were expecting, but no reason why not. I've done it loads of times on various PCs and it's always been fine.

Nope - I've had this a few months and I've had zero issues. I've not seen any ghosting or stuckpixels. The only issue was that it does seem to ship with very high brightness. I've had to turn it down a fair way. The comparison with my old LG TN panel is not kind to my old LG.

Should be good, if the monitors have different vertical pixel counts you would have to set them up, if the AMD sys is anything like Nvidia, it should be a very easy task.

I use HP LP2475W for my gamig rig and it has been a great set up, zero dead pixels, great viewing angles.... pretty much a great display.
