Considering buying the Dell U2414H am I wrong to?

I use PC for browsing web / light office duties and occasional gaming.

Best price I can find currently is £158 inc VAT & shipping with 3yrs Dell warranty.

Like the spec / reviews / design of this monitor but am I shooting myself in the foot? should I consider a 2560 x 1440 monitor?

If you're not gaming, 2560 x 1440 is a must have. I had it on a Catleap for ages, it's amazing, would highly recommend just on a whim I went 144hz which is also (in an ideal world!) essential viewing.

Especially, the 16:10 (extra vertical pixels) is a god-send .

You see this is what's stopping me, my first post I worded wrong .

Out of my total computing use gaming is occasional but on that particular PC gaming is the main use.

So order of use of that PC is firstly gaming , second online use and lastly office.

I've never used or seen a 144hz display so are you saying I would be blown away by one if gaming on it?

Bespoke offers is offering U2414H @ £154.56 inc. VAT & shipping, which is only £5 more than lowest price posted on HUK and same as lowest on camelcamelcamel.com.

Have been considering this monitor for a while can anyone guide me to something better?

Max budget say £200 may go higher if suggestion really entice me!

check out the very comprehensive review on tftcentral. the 2414 sounds very good and no backlight flicker! when I get some spare cash I may well be getting one.

Cheers for info , was made aware of them from haunting HUK .

Seen the P2414H going for £89 without stand, I prefer the U2414H due to smaller bezel. Aware the image starts 5mm in from the 1mm bezel also. Not seen any listings on HUK for U2414H refurb'd but only new; some scratched / minor cosmetic damage ones went on ebay from NRG for about £110 with 1yr warranty. When paying that sort of money I'd rather go new.

Seen so many recommendations for this monitor on OCN / web but did notice on OCN mention of issue with nvidia cards using limited range RGB colour over DP. Also stated in this review Link:- https://pcmonitors.info/reviews/dell-u2414h/

As I use AMD not an issue, I'm so sold on this monitor! missed out on the besoke offer last night as got busy with other stuff but got another for £155 and if no more posts will order tonight.

I would be looking for reviews of 144hz IPS panels at 16:10 or if you can handle it, just 1080p. Or even 1440p.

I don't think I would buy a Dell, that's just me inexperience.

Have a look at some of the serious TFT review sites, http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/ and http://www.prad.de/ (though you'll need to use Google Translate or just pick from the shorter list of reviewed and translated displays).

By the way, even if you do want the dell, it's worth finding a review on those sites for a lot of in depth detail prior to your own decision.

16:10 don't appeal to me, perhaps I'm wrong to not want that, can you expand on why I should get that ratio of panel?

Did go to PC world to see if they had a 144Hz model on display and they didn't. But did give all the monitors a wobble on display and they wibbled like jelly. I did that as read so many posts saying how solid the Dell is on the stand.

144Hz 1920x1080 is what I think I would go if find around £200 mark but not willing to pay £300. I know if my 6yr old scribbled all over it, like he did with my current screen about a year ago I'd cry!

Dell's policy on zero bright pixels seems good to me? 3yrs warranty as well with express exchange.

Did read the review of it on TFTCentral also when went through their TFT selector it suggested that one to me.

It's just nicer having the task bar at the bottom and still having roughly 16:9 for Web browsing and that sort of thing. I've got it on my laptop, and super handy for Web browsing and documents etc

as above and full size A4 top to bottom possible on 1920x1200 so you can layout 2 pages side by side at 100% which I find incredibly useful. It's horses for courses. I am stuck on 1920x1080 and it only occasionally bothers me.

Firstly big thanks to Millennium for posting about 16:10 ratio first and getting me thinking .

Also big thanks to MrRockliffe and ik9000 on their posts for share of experience and thought provoking comments .

You see guys I've had the PC connected to a 42" Plasma for gaming use for several months, thus thought new monitor in 16:9 be ok. I checked what I'd used before that for 6-7 years (still used for non gaming bits on that PC), it's a 20" Samsung monitor with 1680x1050 resolution and 16:10 ratio.

So if I had no issue on the ratio of the 20" then I can't see why I wouldn't on the new one plus perhaps be better all rounder, as really don't want 2 screens connected.

When I had that visit to PC World a day ago I suddenly realised how rectangular the 16:9 looks compared to 16:10 and think now sitting at a desk I may find 16:9 odd. When I use the plasma I sit a fair distance away on a sofa so perhaps don't notice this rectangularness.

So glad I started this thread and glad I missed out on bespoke offer again last night.

A quick thought has been to get the U2415H but it commands 33% price hike for 11% more pixels, cheapest I can find it is £200.

So perhaps time to start a new thread as purchase budget would increase and something better than that be out there or not?

Up to you, use this thread if you like (it'll be a little easier), or if you want opinions on another specific model (Dell U2415H for example ) just try another, or something more general if you'd just like impressions on 16:9 vs 16:10 or similar.

FWIW, I still use a 4:3 monitor at my mum's house (17") and it is a great form factor, just with TV all going 16:9 widescreen you don't see much else any more. I had a 16:10 Catleap, recently sold it on (thinking oops now) but I must say the extra vertical pixels for reading web pages were very welcome indeed.

edit: that 17" tft was a 5:4 actually, IIRC

Read a great big thread about 16:9 vs 16:10 and TBH boiled down to each person's own opinion / take on what they used PC for.

In another thread with a poll (300ish voters) basically went 50/50 on 16:9 vs 16:10.

I know what you mean about 4:3, I wasn't an early adopter of TFTs and hung on to CRT for a while.

I defo agree 16:10 for non gaming purposes has a lot of pluses and possibly for aerial viewpoint games.

I didn't get the Dell , what I got is in this thread due to the discounted price it was going, features and the main role for screen usage.

I have this Dell U2414H monitor and its amazing picture..but the only grip I have is the touch sensitive button to turn it on and off...they are not responsive enough
