Get the premium for definite, it comes with the HDMI port now like the elite which on my TV was the only way to gte 1080p, I could only do 1080i on component.

HEXUS FOLDING TEAM It's EASY
You will find that some of the game discs also have the updates on them, so you may not even have to connect to the net at all.
To put right some mistaken advice scattered around the thread:
Xbox 360 Arcade DOES come with a wireless controller (same as premium)
Xbox 360 Arcade DOES come with a HDMI output (same as premium)
Xbox 360 Arcade DOES NOT come with a hard drive (has a 256MiB memory card instead)
The Arcade is missing an Xbox Live headset, ethernet cable and HD cable. It has a composite cable and five Xbox Live Arcade games included instead.
The premium is definitely the better package as the hard drive is practically essential for Xbox Live use. But, otherwise, the Arcade shouldn't be ignored so easily - particularly for users with no intention of going online.
The Arcade was also released later on in the 360 lifeline to replace the old (and useless) Core. It's therefore certain to have the more-reliable innards.
heh i had a neo geo cd, loved the thing too
Got to disagree with you. It should be ignored pretty much entirely, by anyone. Unless its for a young kid with a portable telle in his room that only plays it occasionally, I fail to see its market.
The Arcade is what we used to call the "suckers package" at GAME. You will almost always end up buying something for it later on down the line that would have made the Premium a better buy.
Also another thing to consider - I've just looked at Play who are doing only the one deal on the arcade here, otherwise its £149.99. Gamestation are doing it for with any two "selected" games from a list for £195, and GAME have no bundle deals with it on their site.
Now, I'm going to take an educated guess here and say that Saracen is going to be playing this in some sort of HD mode (VGA, HDMI, Component). The official leads for HD are just under £20 on the highstreet, excluding HDMI which you'll probably pick up for a tenner or so.
With this one thing added, you're not shy off the £179.99 deal that Play are doing here with 3 games. Granted the Golden Compass I wouldn't expect to be much cop, but they other two are decent. So much so that if he brought that package and flogged the games still sealed for a around tenner each, it brings it down to the same price as the Arcade but with the headset (just incase ), no need for an additional HD cable unless you really want to go 1080p, Ethernet cable (yeah yeah I know) and more importantly the Harddrive.
It just doesn't matter which way I work it out, the Arcade is a bad buy given the 'deals' out there. Once you factor in selling the games from the package I linked its a no brainer as far as I can see?
The only time I could see an exception is if you can find the arcade with a deal on the games that you want now and can't wait for them to drop in a couple of months. Buying a HD lead though still slowly makes it creep up to premium territory.
Think seriously about buying a console without a hard drive. Only a very few games have required them but some do cache to them when available and speed things up quite a bit (eg GTA4 as mentioned above). I can only see this getting more common as the games become more complicated and the console is pushed.
For me it would be better safe than sorry with regards to a hard drive. You really don't need the elite though.
Not around too often!
Despite making a case for the Arcade console (a case which I still believe exists!), I'd have to go along with Agent's post above.
Right now, the Xbox 360 Premium has the best deals and they're hard to ignore. I linked to the Play.com bundle in an earlier post too, it's a steal.
The Arcade console does have its place, but it's out-gunned by very good deals offered on the 360 Premium.
Erm .... nope.
It's a vintage 28" CRT-type telly, not LCD or Plasma.
But .... I can't fault your logic. I would not buy directly to suit what I have now if it's going to cause problems down the road, unless preparing for that future requirement was too expensive right now. In other words, I don't need HD yet. But unless it added to the costs significantly, I'd avoid options that would cause significant problems or expense when I do change the TV, whether that be 3 months or 3 years time.
And the point about the package deals is precisely what I had in mind with the caveat in my last post. I have looked around at various sources and deals,(including, obviously, those linked in this thread), but I hadn't studied the cost of the Arcade when I posted. I just had the (correct, it seems) impression that it was the Premium that was mainly being pushed, followed less aggressively by the Elite, and pretty much not at all on the Arcade.
On the other hand, having just watched yesterday's Gadget show, it's got me wondering about the Wii again, as and when I can get a Wii Fit (without paying extortionate prices, or importing it myself).
I can see me ending up with both.
Not only that Jo, but quite a few of the games will play really badly on composite. Deadrising for example - where its impossible to see the text in game. Its not the only one either, you'll struggle to read information in the HUD on a lot of games.
Without wanting to put a dampener on things, if you're planning to run it through a SD connection / tele, I would seriously either buying a new tele or look at getting an older console.
The 360/PS3 experience under SD is rather poor. The Wii manages it fairly well though.
Edit - posted at the same time as you Saracen
