List of Games with heavy handed DRM.
Taken from this open letter: http://invasive_drm.mindriot.as/open..._industry.html
I think the list there is useful and I don't think I'll be buying any of the games on the list until their DRM gets relaxed by a patch. I'll try to keep this first post updated. I'd like to add information on the type of DRM and number of installs allowed to this list later as well for everyone's reference, mine included.
Mass Effect: SecuROM, can be authenticated 5 times
Dead Space: SecuRom, 5 installs, online authentication http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Sp...ideo_game)#DRM
Mirror's Edge
Spore: Securom, 5 computers at the same time http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spore_(...OM_controversy
C & C 3: Kane's Wrath
Crysis Warhead: Securom, 5 computers
Red Alert 3: SecuRom, 5 installs, online authentication
Farcry 2: 5 install limit http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-gaming...d-news-pc.html
X3: Terran Conflict: Tagès no limit (non steam), 5 computers (steam)
Grand Theft Auto IV: SecuROM copy protection, and will require one-time online authentication via the Internet and will also require the game disc in the drive to play. The game can be installed on an unconnected PC, but will still require online activation. "GTA IV PC also requires a number of software installations, including Games For Windows, Adobe Flash, Internet Explorer, SecuROM and our Rockstar Games Social Club application.". No install limits.
Bioshock: install limit has been removed.
Colin McRae DIRT: latest patch 1.22 removes Starforce protection. Has a DRM issue that means for some people the application won't boot on a valid install. The only workaround at the time was to remove the disk, load up, and then reinsert the disc when the securom popup appeared.
football manager 2009: 5 install limit
Re: List of Games with heavy handed DRM.
Another to add to that list is Bioshock. Better now however as the install limit has been removed from it.
Re: List of Games with heavy handed DRM.
I think Bioshock doesn't need to be on the list now the DRM has been relaxed.
Re: List of Games with heavy handed DRM.
How about listing the DRM type with each game. Which one does MoHA have?
Re: List of Games with heavy handed DRM.
I couldn't find much info in MOH: airbourne DRM other than it has SecuROM, so I'm taking it off my list. Same for Hellgate.
Re: List of Games with heavy handed DRM.
Mass Effect needs monthly Authentication. Just as a note.
Although apparently this is being patched due to high number of complaints (someone verify this.. I got this bit of information from a salesperson, who may just have been trying to get me to buy it..)

No it doesn't. Activation is one-time, like most games.
Re: List of Games with heavy handed DRM.
According to back of box it needs 'regular' authencitication. Are you sure? Would save me a lot of hassle if so.

Box was over-cautious, and a 10 day activation period was mooted, but withdrawn well before release.
Re: List of Games with heavy handed DRM.
Oh good... means I don't have to drag computer to a internet connection every month then :)
Re: List of Games with heavy handed DRM.
lots of EA games listed there.. which only adds to my cause of boycotting ea games
Re: List of Games with heavy handed DRM.
Ciber, could you also distinguish those that allow you to revoke activations? In my view they're not so bad.
Re: List of Games with heavy handed DRM.
It's actually not that easy to find out info about DRM. Hence the need for this thread I thought! I was hoping we could get people to post what they know in here and I can add it to the 1st post.
Re: List of Games with heavy handed DRM.
Okay cool. Your X3:TC entry is incorrect -only the steam version has limited computers, the normal version just has a disk check like usual and no online check, so it's not what I'd call heavy handed.
Also I'd only reference prime sources - wiki is not reliable.
Re: List of Games with heavy handed DRM.
Colin McRae DIRT's latest patch 1.22 removes Starforce protection. I think all game developers should consider removing protection once the retail product sales are becoming exhausted. The gaming experience for those that have bought the title increases which primes these customers for the next installment so to speak!
Re: List of Games with heavy handed DRM.
The Steam version of Crysis (original) has a 5 machine install limit whereas the retail copy has none.
It seems pretty safe to say that any EA PC title released after and including Spore carries the 5 machine limit securom DRM...
