    SOCOM on PS2

My friend Auran came over on Wed/Thurs and brought a few new games to try

And SOCOM (Navy Seals. stealth-em-up with voice activated commands for the team) is really very very good.

You do need to spend a little time getting into "aiming with a console controller" mode, which is not easy, but once again, PS2 shines on more than one front.

The first is that the TV/Surround sound/whatever you have system priovides the in game sounds, music etc....BUT you have a monaural headset and boom mic, which you hear the instructions through, and through which you control your team.

The bugger works too....very very well .Its a USB dongle, plugs straight into the PS2 and didnt need voice calibration.

    Its the best system.....WHO.....WHAT..WHERE.

So..hit the O key, briefly and up come the first menu...

    Able or Brave team
    Choose it, speak it....

    Next menu.....
Attack, Steal move, Form, Rejoin, etc etc....(lots of choice)

    Speak it

    then WHERE....

SO pick a position from the map OR where the reticule you are aiming is pointed etc.

    It works

and once you're good......real them off in one hit

Yeah, it's not bad, I'm on the beta test team and tested that one a lot
SOCOM2 ain't too bad either, but they still haven't fixed half the bugs that were reported in the first one

the snow looked great, the lighting was good, and its really vastly better than I would have hoped for.

But the best thing is this difference between voice comms from HQ and the actual game sounds. Its hard for anyone watching/listening to you play to know whats going on, because the voice comms are in your right ear, but it adds destinct excitement to the reality of the game. And no, I DIDNT hide behind the sofa for that extra bit of added realism

Menu's were pretty OK to sort through, maps (when pulled up) have a function where you cycle through the different taks and a small arrowed line shows you the route, NOT that you have to obey that at all. Its pretty free roaming. I liked this game a lot. (I really had trouble with Medal of Honour on PS2 but this little beauty was far more....natural.)

Not that Igot far.....I got whacked on the head by stealthed-up terrorists, shot at, and out aimed....but its good. Really good. Pick up the corpses, drop them in the shadowed bits, lisyten to the enemy as they whisper secrets, make sure you have a team mate to translate so that you can report it back, objective complete.....kill the buggers

Its not quite Raven Shield, and doesnt have fluid movement/fluid posture for crouch stand prone etc...but it tries damn hard. Some clever stuff as well....while carrying a body you cant walk properly, so to turn while walking you have to change the view direction and walk forward. It helps to slow you down in what is a tricky situation.

Shooting out flood lights, and sniping at the bad guys brings it's own sense of "Thief, the Dark project" and while I didn't find any Moss Arrows to walk silently on hard floors, it did a good enough job for me to look at it twice in Game before realising my life is full enough already.

    So..thanks Auran....you'rea star

It does get slightly annoying when you forget to tell your bravo team to go cold, have just spent 30 minutes sneaking through the jungle silently taking out sentries, to call them up for support and they just run past you cowboy style gunning everything in sight, alerting a nearby army (well there were quite a few of them) so you get you arse shot off.....

If you like SOCOM, try Rainbow Six 3, it is 10 times better! and Co-op mode is a laugh too (pity you can only play levels completed in single player mode first though ).

Got better last night - got through the jungle and infiltrated the temple silently, everything was going swimmingly till the terrorist leader I was after tried to do a bunk, came out firing and one of bravo team sniped him because he was shooting at them - bang went my secondary objective and 40minutes of effort.
