Movies of HL2 not playing.

Hello all,

Dunno if this is the right place to be asking, but seen as it's about a game I guess here is as good as any.
I've downloaded a HL2 Trailer, from Fileplanet, the e3 video, but it won't play for some reason. I open it up with win media player 9 series (Ver: 9.00.00.2980) but only the music plays, no images...
When i try to play it under Quicktime, it just pops up saying "You may have problems playing a video track in HalfLife2gsi.avi because the required compressor could not be found" and qt also says theres nothing it can download from the qt update server for this problem, quicktime version: 6.5 free version.

Any ideas guys ?

Im guessing its DivX, you need the codec from www.divx.com there is a tiny link for the free nonadware one

that or use ffdshow which provides codecs for almost every mpeg-4 system out there.

or get nic's xvid binary from http://nic.dnsalias.com/xvid.html which will do everything mpeg4 at a quality which ffdshow can only look up to and hope for

Yup that's sorted it, Thx guys, dunno what we'd do without the hexus community :-)

Ps, Just watched the e3 movie.. and.. WOW ! hl2 looks amazing.
Im off to go dl the rest of the movies now, thx again guys.

Umm... what exactly dose this spyware do ?
Because I just tried playing a recent played file on DivX and my comp crashed, and it crashed in a way i've never seen be for, at first it scared the crap out of me because it looked like something similar to the blaster worm, as the blue screen of death poped up and the comp speakers made a really weird crackerling and beeping sound. I didn't get chance to read all of that was on the screen when it crashed, i only got as far as "Your computer is being stoped and shutdown to prevent harm to your system..." etc etc, what is going on ???

PS. A new Startup line has now also been added to my start up list (aka startup config utility or msconfig) this is it:

Startup item: dumprep 0 -k
Command: %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

The systemroot in there sounds bad is it ?

%systemroot% is a shortcut to the windows folder, e.g. d:\winnt or c:\windows

dumprep is harmless but useless (related to memory dumps made by default on bluescreens)
