    Valve attempts to copyright physics!

valve attempted to file a lawsuit against a physics teacher for releasing a trade secret or something...(cant be bothered to explain, just read)
    http://bbspot.com/News/2003/12/valve...ed_theory.html

valve is so powerful, they even control physics!

please not this may be a fake story as apparently some guy created a rift in the time space continuum with his p3,

    thanks man
just wish we could use that physics engine!
this makes you think about what sort of physics half life 3s gonna have in it,
    ultra realistic gameplay anyone?

Erm Half Life 2's physics engine is going to be crap matey, compare it to something like IL2 and HL2's physics engine will be crap. Most of the planes have so many damage points its untrue. Plus they are actually flying and have to take account of weight of bombs, cannons, flaps ailerons etc.

Simple fact is a FPS is relatively simple compared to most simulators out there. (at least in terms of physics)

    thanks for sinking my boat!
i actually played il2, didnt really notice the physics all that much, but then again i was crap at it and couldnt get to a point were i could drop bombs or really get shot at
which was gay...may give it another go some time

Tbh nowhere in games physics go beyond the simplest of approximations. All this lovely wood that splinters when shot just has to look cool doing it. It doesn't have to splinter the way real wooden object would. By this i mean exact positions of fractures and etc. All this can be simulated but will probably require at least a couple minutes computing time. When u only need it to splinter for effect you don't have to worry about any of that though.

IL2 looks good, but if you thought about it damage model is limited. You don't see planes with bent wings - its either there or it isn't, all damage is contained within the original wings dimentions. For gameplay it doesn't really matter, but we can't claim that the physics there are anywhere near perfect.

And in case you don't trust me - i am currently doing a PhD in mechanical engineering, part of which includes simulation of powder compaction using finite element methods. From experience - some simulations complete in minutes, some annoying materials take weeks to compute But we find ways around that
Tough on mirrors, tough on the causes of mirrors.

Please stop immediately. I've patented it. And I'm about to file a lawsuit against you! :-)

It may be limited compared to real life but for physics in game its certainly one of the best damage models out there. Bent props, flaps, engine torque, starter engines having an effect on the way the place turns.

Sure it may not be like modelling particles but damn its good in terms of what they do....

I guess it all boils down to the Maddox being more qualified than most to write such an engine...

    bbspot is a spoof site.

and hl2 uses the off-the-shelf havok physics engine.
