Does anyone have an approximation on much Microsoft spent on the launch of the Xbox in the UK (promotions etc.)?
I've seen the $500 million figures in a few places, although I assume that its refering to either the US launch or global launch.

They spent alot of money, not sure exactly how much, but I do know that they were loosing $200 per console to start off with (about 3 months) until they started being manufactured in large ammounts..

They probably didn't lose as much in the UK. The XBox cost is estimated to be around about ~$400-something to manufacture. It was launched at £299 (although slashed by £100 5 weeks later).. That translate to roughly $450. Granted there are probably taxes, transport (since it was probably assembled in Eastern Europe) etc.
But I am guessing that their loss were less substantial than elsewhere.
