XBox 360 or PS3...a tough one.

    Hello there guys!

I've been pondering for the past couple months on whether I should shell out for a XBox360...when they start appearing in the stores that is. Then again, am I better off waiting for the PS3?

I really want to play the new Dead or Alive, MGS4 (when ever it is out) and a couple other titles. It's just that I've heard that hte Xbox360 feels like a regular xbox, and graphics aren't amazing...and neither are the current games out there. All this and it crashes too....

    Have any thoughts?

    Cheers, Mike

All of them! I plan to add the ps3 and revolution to my xbox360. Don't listent to all of the guff you have heard about the xbox 360 either, if you have a hd setup the quality is amazing and most peoples haven't broken. Remember you don't tend to hear from the happy people. The launch games for the 360 are a mixed bag, but PGR3 is fantastic, I don't usually go for driving games, but this one is a cracker. Amped 3 is also good. I would say go for it. Then get the ps3 when it comes out in a years time!

I'm amazed how good the x360 feels, first console since sega megadrive and i'm not disappointed. IMO console gaming has grown up

its a tricky one for sure. i'm still holding out for a ps3 at the moment - i could buy both, but dont want my av setup being full of consoles, and i've got a back catalog of ps2 games i can play.. however i'd be surprised if the ps3 makes it out much before xmas.. thats a whole year of gaming.. and it'll (i think) be a smidge more expensive than the xbox too.. its something to think hard about..

I'm mainly leaning towards the PS3 because I've got a back catalogue of PS2 games and I'm sure that the laser on my PS2 will die eventually.

If there's any games released on the Xbox 360 or Revolution that I really like, I'll buy them too though.

lol, my xbox 360 was my first console purchase since the sega saturn.

I'd go for the xbox 360. There are some great games out for it (COD2, Kameo, PDZ, PGR3, Condemed) and many more to come (gears of war, dead or alive, resident evil 5, halo 3). Of course they don't use the console to the maximum of its abilities, I heard a rumour that the current games only use 1 of the 8 pipelines in the graphics chip. But this will improve as games developers learn to exploit it's power. Developers have already said they find it a lot easier to code for the 360 which will attract better games. Also I think the xbox 360 will be a lot more fun than the ps3, with its Media extender capabilities (although without DivX) and nothing can beat the experience of a good game on Xbox Live.

People keep talking about HD and I've got to admit it's impressive (I've got a new HD 24" screen coming today for it) but I think in a lot of games what makes the most difference (assuming you've got a decent TV) is the sound. If you hook a dolby digital amp and some decent 5.1 speakers around you and you'll be blown away. Play COD 2 and hear the grenades being thrown accross your head then exploding behind you then watching the soil fly forward and hearing other soldiers screaming from all directions and telling you where the nazi's are. Nothing's quite as scary as playing condemed in the dark then hearing some crack head run up behind you and it makes a lot of the creepy music comes to life. I'm sure the ps3 will also have digital sound output, it's just I thought I'd make the point that it's not worth blowing all your money on an expensive HDTV then listening to it through the built in speakers.

true, but it does depend a lot on the telly - my set (toshiba 36zp48 - 36" crt) has got dolby digital 5.1 built in (4 external speakers) and to my ears they are an easy match for the creative dtt 5700s i used to run - ie, pretty blooming good

    Thanks for the comments guys

Right now I'm tortured between the availability on eBay for ~400quid, but that's just..not fair lol.

I'm gonna wait till they start popping up in store, so I guess March or so? I have one other problem. I want to connect the XBox to my Apple 23" display, while I'm at Uni. I have no TV and it would be too difficult having one (as I have to clear my room at the end of each term!). So what I'm after is something to interface the xbox to a DVI female socket. Any ideas?

    Thanks, Mike

I would personally go for the 360 (as I am going to do) as apparently the PS3 is way far from release. There are a million reasons why you should buy it that you already know, but if you want some good console gaming now, and you don't fancy waiting until theres another number added to your age, then get a 360. PS3 Spring release = God posting in Hexus - it ain't gonna happen. And you know what Japs do, even if they DO make Spring release, it will be theirs first, then Americans, and then us Brits last (like the PSP, it took a year to be officially released over here ¬_¬ )

Sony are already falling behind and making a massive loss. They'll want to roll it out quickly!

But yes the japs will be first then i reckon everywhere else will get it roughly the same time.

Heyas Unreal, nice to see another ecchi hermit (jiraiya) fan hahaha (naruto ref for the rest of ya) - Yes, you've make quite a few valid points. Tbh I don't expect the PS3 to be on time either - usually things never go as planned and as you said add on the wait for Jap/US first it's deffo gonna be a year later...

Now if only I find an easy way of connecting the XBox to a DVI display (has a DVI male connector)....This is an Apple 23" display, not a TV - hence the problem.

I got an xbox 360 premium from Argos, without even pre-ordering, so they are available, you just have to be in the right place at the right time. Could you not just use a dvi to vga converter as you would for a gfx card?

I'm not exactly sure what termination the xbox cabling uses, but if it *does* have VGA out, that would most likely be a female connector no? Of course the Apple supplied DVI > VGA connect also has a female end, so I'll need a male to male VGA passthru connector...if I get desperate enuff I can solder one up in the lab sometime later. I'll first visit PC World and see what adaptors they have. I'll call up GAME and see what they say as well.

    Cheers, Mike
