Wow, that's crazy. I'll keep a look out and post if I see another case of this.

was it an official xbox controller? maybe just a bad batch. You can get capacitors to spontaneously combust cant you?

a cap shouldnt pop if its only running on 5v... and even then it would be electrolite coming out rather than a flame?

This is very worrying, my 7yr old plays on his own upstairs with the box every day!

Was there any liquid involved at the time or before it happened?

Does the controller & box still function? Obviously, I understand if you have not plugged it in to try.....

Ahh finally good reason to buy a playstation

I'm guessing the wires shorted, sounds like a lot more power than should be running through a xbox controller to shoot flames. Tell her to photograph her finger too.

    Thanks for all the responses.

Yes, they were official controllers, no there was no liquids involved, no I have not plugged it back in but I'm going to say both controllers would still be functional. My daughter said she had gotten a message on the television a couple times just before the incident, something about "controller 1 not being plugged in" or something like that. She said she had to reboot the X-box each time after checking the connections and it came back up. Right after the third time the flame appeared so it sure seems like some kind of a short in the system. The wire has a tiny hole burned through it where the little flame came out, thankfully my daughter thought to blow it out before setting it down and getting her mother!

I went to the Microsoft X-box online support and went through the problem, then was told to call Microsoft directly. I did this and explained my story twice, the second time to a nice woman who said she was a Supervisor. Everyone was very nice, and quite concerned in making sure there was no damage or injury, which there was not. I was then told ANOTHER Supervisor needed to get back to me the following day, however it's been 1.5 weeks and I have not heard anything further. I think I will be back on the phone tomorrow to see what is up.

Sounds like people are interested in the saga so I will update agin soon.

Hench - apologies for not getting back to you sooner, I've been without internet access, and trying to catch up with all the stuff I've missed. I don't think my friend took this any further, but I'll find out.
